Dear Lauren,

I'm currently studying Dance at Kingston University and for my final year I have to complete a minimum of 40 hours on placement. I am very interested in the performance side of dance. I'm ballet trained but have also danced contemporary, jazz and different styles in my dance course. I understand the dance world is somewhat limited as to what is currently allowed by the Covid rules but I wonder whether you would consider having me and complete my placement with your company. My aim is to learn how a company is run, including taking part in classes, shadowing and assisting in delivering classes. I will be available during Christmas and midterm in February.

If I were to be successful in this application I would embrace this opportunity fully and believe it would assist me in my immediate personal development and future career. To be able to write my assignment I had to get experience and find out how a company is run but because of Covid restrictions I haven’t been able to do that so I was wondering whether you’d mind answering these questions. I understand that some information may be sensitive but I give you my utmost guarantee that all the information I receive is totally confidential and will only be used for the assignment on my placement.
For instance, could I have some background information on yourselves the founders/directors of the company and how the company started, including any successes attained. Also a brief comment on any set rules you have within the company.
Could I have a copy of your timetable to see how the lessons are divided and what classes you offer.
What is the age range of the pupils in your company?
What syllabus do you follow?
How many people are employed in your company and what are their roles?
Are there any helpers?
How is the company funded?
How is the funding used within the company?
How do you fund the competitions abroad?
Do you receive any help from Government? (eg funding or otherwise)
Do you offer opportunities for the students to develop within your company and abroad?
How do you promote your company? Eg social media? Productions? Adverts?
Could I have a breakdown of costs during a production?
How has Covid impacted on the running of your company?
Do you have any future plans for the company?
Is there anything else I have not thought about and you feel is important to add?

Thank you for your prompt reply. I am interested in performing myself but also seek a future career helping others through dance and your company is ideal for me to learn about the work that you do.

I would love the opportunity to shadow and help deliver dance classes to the elderly, those with special needs or disabilities and particularly Alzheimers and Dementia patients. My grandfather passed away from this disease in March and I couldn't help but notice the lack of stimulation the patients were receiving in his care home and so I feel I could learn a lot from your company.

I understand the difficulties you must encounter with covid and I am keen to help out in whatever way possible. My aim is to learn how a company is run and I feel I will accomplish this by being a part of using dance to help people in the community.

I have to complete at least 40 hours roughly between January and March and this can be both online and in person. I really hope you consider having me and I look forward to your reply.

I forgot to mention that I have in the past applied for a job at the 'Stay and Play' in my hometown Gibraltar where my autistic cousin attends. They provide children with special needs with enjoyable activities including dance during the summer months and it also serves as a much needed respite for the parents. I feel your company would help me develop skills in this area which I would put to good use in the summer months.

Hi Lizzie,

Thank you very much for your email, unfortunately at this time Swindon Dance is currently closed due to Government restrictions. Although we hope to reopen again in January, as we had done in September it is unlikely that we will be operating our full timetable of classes or performances, with most of our staff continuing to work from home.

Sadly, I feel that we are unable to offer what you are looking for in a placement at this time. As mentioned in your email, I can see that you are interested in the performance element and was wondering if you had contacted dance performance companies. Swindon Dance is a dance organisation, rather than a performance company. Within the charity we have an Education team, Community dance programme and Centre for Advanced training (CAT). We do run performances and have professional companies visit to perform, but this is not solely our main area of work.

From past experience I can recommend National Dance Company of Wales, if you are looking for experience shadowing a performing company. Though there are many more options around the UK for you to explore depending on your interests.

Depending on the outcome of discussions with your tutor, if you take class each day and attend the activities on December 1st and 2nd, this would give you approximately 11 hours plus reflection and time to write up.

Hi Lizzie,

Now that you know Dollie can't accommodate you and you haven't heard from Christie (worth sending a follow up by the way). I would like you to research and create a database of 10 contacts you would be interested in pursuing in addition to the 5 you were supposed to do within your groups, as part of the Participation & Engagement task. That is 15 in total. You will need to acquire their names and email addresses as basic information to approach after we speak Friday.

At this point, you will really have to let go of personal choice and widen your field of interest to get the additional 10 contacts. We can then discuss this research during the 1 to 1 and scope how to approach them.

Use social media, use websites, research work those artists / performers have done, you really must investigate and put in the work, this will take time. As at this stage, contacting two people is not enough of an enquiry to secure a placement.

I can do 3pm or 4pm on Friday? Do let me know and I will pencil it in.

Thanks for your email.

I would be interested to have a look at your database of who you were in touch with to understand how much you research you did and how many feelers are out there. It would also give me an idea about the type of organisations/companies you have been approaching. Can you send that over please?

Have you been following up after the first contact with these leads? on email, different contacts at the same organisation and over the phone where possible?

As I mentioned when we last spoke, performance-based work placements are really going to be hard to secure, have you thought about extending your search slightly? and if so, what would this include and have you done any further research in this new direction?

Hi Lee, just wondering if Stephen got back to you about being able to do placement in Gibraltar? I’ve got many replies back saying they are either closed or cannot allow any placements due to covid. Russell Maliphant Dance Company got back to me saying there is an opportunity to do 2 days in December. I am not sure if they mean I will continue in January or if it’s just the 2 days, so I have emailed them back to find out.

Hi Lee, I am concerned that I won't be able to do the 40 hours here in Gibraltar as they finish for Christmas this week, I might have an opportunity to do a placement in a dance school in UK. I would like to be able to compare how the two schools are run for my essay. Would this be ok?

Hi Lee,

I hope you can help me. I am very concerned that I still don't have a placement. I have applied for quite a few and I'm still waiting for some replies. I have had a 10 minute interview with be.comotion but was unsuccessful which is a shame as I was really looking forward to be a part of a film they would be working on in January. I would really like a performing placement but I do not seem to have much luck. Could you please point me in the right direction.

Hi Lee,

I have had an interview with bo.Comotion but was not successful. I was prepared to widen my approach and was quite excited about it, especially being part of a film due to start in January but I wasn't lucky.

I've also approached candoco.co.uk and they sent an automated reply saying they'd reply in 3 days. This was on the 25th, so I've sent another inquiry. I have applied to ascensiondance which is mainly working on social media. I have had no reply from springsdancecomp nor from Dollie Henry so I have sent another inquiry.

As I was having no luck I’ve also sent emails to stopgapdance.com and dancenetworkassociation.org.uk who also accept internships.

I'm really worried as I should have something organised by now and I've had no luck.
