It turns out that the three men from chapter 2 are his "father" Joe and the chaperones Mr Gold and Mr Spike. The focus is also on a red-haired boy, a black-haired girl and another boy called Jon.
Setting: A dining hall with long tables
Plot: Connor sits at a table with his "family", which is called "Dignity". The red-haired boy starts talking to him, even though he knows that Connor isn’t allowed to talk because of his level. This attracts Joe's attention - the "father" of Dignity. He takes care of it by confronting Connor but gets angry because he assumes, based on Connor's answers, he doesn’t respect him and Lake Harmony. Joe wants Connor to tell the others why his parents sent him to Lake Harmony. When Connor refuses and asks to talk to Joe about it privately, Joe tells it anyway: Connor is in a relationship with his former teacher, a woman ten years his senior, and ignored his parents' thoughts about it. Connor doesn’t respond to Joe's provocation, but instead acts calmly. This makes Joe so furious that he orders Mr Gold and Mr Sparks to bring Connor to the TI.

Jon and Ron visit him daily to beat him up. But only in such way that you wouldn’t notice it in the next day - this is Joe's rule. All alone again, when Ron and Jon have left, Connor thinks about his past again. He remembers a trip to the Colorado River with his father and the time he spent with Sabrina, but also an argument he had with his father when he was younger, because he didn’t go to school regularly. Connor thought it was superfluous, because he learned so much faster than older children anyway and could spend the time differently.

On the way there he asks Mr Sparks a question. He disregards the rule that says that one must not speak without being asked. And yet he gets an answer. The topic of the Circle is Sarah, because - after two and a half years - she still hasn’t "improved". Robert tries to annoy her by saying that he's almost a Level Four and she’s still a Level One, but she counters this is only because Robert is just doing everything as Joe wants him to. Pauly uses this to talk to Connor. He says there’s no point in pretending to understand everything they tell you. You really have to believe it to leave Lake Harmony. Pauly also suggest an escape attempt, as this is their only way to get out. But while Connor is still thinking, Joe comes. Jon told him about Pauly's rule break and he receives a painful punishment. This makes Connor realize that Pauly is serious about escaping Lake Harmony. Later Joe orders Connor to pick up a gum wrapper that Joe threw on the floor of the hall outside of the dorm. Again and again. But one time Connor picks up the wrapper even though Joe doesn’t order him to do so. Joe kicks him in the face to punish him. Connor has to continue, but he faints because of his blood loss. When he regains consciousness, the wrapper sticks to him with bloodstains on it. He wants to give it back to Joe, but Joe is suddenly scared and Connor realizes that Joe is afraid of the blood on the wrapper. Connor thinks about chasing Joe around the hall with his "gained power", but stops himself, since this is probably what Joe expects him to do. Instead, he becomes polite again and asks if he should clean the floor.

The blood incident stays unmentioned. Connor is allowed to ask Mr Z a few questions. He only doesn’t get an answer to the question why Connor is one of the few people who visit Mr Z so often and talk to him like that. After dinner there is the possibility to write letters to your parents, but Connor doesn’t feel like it’s necessary. He thinks about how his parents told him to end his relationship with Sabrina and how worried they were about his future. Connor couldn’t understand this, because he mainly lived the life they wanted him to live. He knew that his parents only said such thing, because they didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of their friends. He starts writing a letter almost automatically. When Joe notices this, he first reads the letter in front of everyone and than tears it apart. Later that day Connor is in the bathroom. Suddenly Adam stands behind him with the pointed toothbrush. He cuts Connor in the back with it as a punishment for not letting him have Connor‘s hotdog.

Harry and Rebecca appear again
Setting: At a gas station and in the restaurant of a truck stop
Plot: The driver continues talking about Lake Harmony, but leaves it at that. After some time they stop at a gas station and the man leaves the car to buy food and drinks. Pauly immediately tells them to run away because the man would call the police. Sarah and Connor don’t believe him but decide that running away is the better choice. They hide in a corn field next to the road. Pauly’s intuition turns out to be wrong: The driver thinks they've run away and drives away. Now they look for semi trucks, because the drivers are most likely not to be from here. They quickly find someone. After a while they ask the driver to stop so they can use the bathroom. When all three got out of the truck, the man just drives away and leaves them alone. They still go to the bathroom first. Connor notices a man in the bathroom who resembles Harry, and waits until this man has left the toilets. Connor and Pauly go back to Sarah, who is looking for news about Lake Harmony in magazines. Suddenly Rebecca, eyes on the magazines, comes to them without noticing Connor.
