A stock is a representation of a small part of a company. Purchasing a stock essentially means that you are paying for a part of the company. There’s two main types of stocks a common stock and a preferred stock A common stock is the more common type of stock due to the fact it offers growth in share price. Common shareholders are usually entitled to three things, dividend payments, vote at shareholders meetings, and claim on the company assets. The second type is preferred stock which tends to be more stable, and preferred shareholders are entitled to fixed dividends payments, and claim on company assets.

Face value is the money amount the bond will be worth at maturity; it is also the reference amount the bond issuer uses when calculating interest payments. For example, say an investor purchases a bond at a premium $1,090 and another investor buys the same bond later when it is trading at a discount for $980. When the bond matures, both investors will receive the $1,000 face value of the bond.

The coupon rate is the rate of interest the bond issuer will pay on the face value of the bond, expressed as a percentage. For example, a 5% coupon rate means that bondholders will receive 5% x $1000 face value = $50 every year.

Coupon dates are the dates on which the bond issuer will make interest payments. Payments can be made in any interval, but the standard is semiannual payments.

The maturity date is the date on which the bond will mature and the bond issuer will pay the bondholder the face value of the bond.

The issue price is the price at which the bond issuer originally sells the bonds.

This website outlines and describes what common and preferred stocks are as well as the difference between the two. The main difference outlined between the two is that preferred stock gives no voting rights to shareholders, while common stocks do. This is the main reason as to why common stocks are the more favourable way to go among investors. Another interesting fact was that common stockholders are paid last, which means they will be paid after creditors, and preferred shareholders. Another difference is preferred shareholders have power over a companies income which means essentially they are paid before common shareholders.
