He was born on 14th November 1774, in Low Fell. His father was a pitman. There was no restriction on child labour in the eighteenth century, and Thomas Wilson went to work in the pit when he was eight years old. He must have been a clever child who had already learned to read and write. He worked in the pit until he was nineteen, and then began to teach in a school at Galloping Green about a mile from Low Fell. Gateshead Fell was initially incorporated into the Municipal Borough of Gateshead in 1835 and then the County Borough of Gateshead in 1889.
