Members: Natalie, Anni, Esmeralda, Melody

When Americans Lynched Mexicans

Basic Information:
1. Online Newspaper Article
2. Feb. 20, 2015
3. The New York Times, The Opinion Pages, Op-Ed Contributors

Author's Intent:
1. Carrigan: A professor of History at Rowan University, white middle aged man.
Webb: A professor of modern American history at the University of Sussex, white middle aged man.
2. The way one person grows up and the opportunities given to them often influence their perspectives because privilege can tame and blind. The authors, although it was meant to be a scholarly article, used language that was calm and like previously mentioned, tame. They did question a lot of the credibility of history as it has been told but overall it was a calm tone.
3. Carrigan specializes on lynchings and Webb on political violence in America so due to their expertise, the New York Times most likely saw them the most fit to write this article. They were most likely willing to do so because writing on such a big paper brings light to topics that might not be so popular.
4. The authors talk argue that Mexicans, aside from African Americans, were in large numbers lynched, even though common knowledge says otherwise. The authors give examples about different lynchings throughout the 19th and 20th century and how they not only weren't documented but that authorities had a large part.
5. The intended audience is most likely those who have had the basic "high school" education where they teach the very basic of history, in this case lynchings.
6.The audience might discredit the claims made in the article since it is not popular history or what has been taught.
Historical Context:
Content of the Source:
Relevance of the Source:
