In his seminal essay on planning and postmodernism, Dear (1986) ascribes three legitimate dimensions to the term: as a statement of style (for example, in architecture and urban design), as a method (deconstructionism), and as an epochal transition. Postmodernism is approached here in an heuristic
sense as an epoch, defining the Zeitgeist of the present era. In the theatre of urban planning, new trends are discernible which reflect fundamental shifts in social life and economic organisation. An architectural style in response to the formal, sterile and high-rise modernist architecture. Typified by its playfulness, ambiguity and illusoriness. Usually involves a decontextualisation of historical form and then a reconstruction for functions of spectacle, entertainment or distraction.

2. A method of analysis
Associated with deconstructionist analysis and critiques of existing authorities and interpretations to reveal underlying 'cultural codes' within discourses. Emphasis on criticality, skepticism and fragmentation.

3. An epochal transition
A view of modernity's dominant narratives of human reason, science and progress as having failed. Critique of modernity as having led to ecological and social degradation.

  • A high-rise apartment was planned to be built in the suburb of West End
  • The development planning was going to stretch along Montague Road, which include a major supermarket, retail space, and 193 units across two buildings; one eight storeys and one nine storeys 
  • It will be entirely privately owned, and despite its advertisement as a "cultural, social and retail centre" it will create an exclusive environment
  • those who reside in the property will always be the priority whereas undesirables will be excluded 
  • The large size of the development raised local's concern; as mentioned by Cr Sri "I've written a 17-page submission because it raises so many glaring, concerning issues in terms of traffic management because that area is quite congested already."
  • The proposal of establishing a very large supermarket, however, could threaten the local businesses such as small delis, smaller fruits and vegetables shops, and also the West End's famous Davies Park markets.

We have moved back to the settlement design which had no correlation to nature, quality of life, or any identity of place. Instead of settlements, it is now 9 story's high with everything a person could want. The postmodern world has been determined through the intrinsic breakdown of territorialized socioeconomic systems, which is now organized with artificial replacements of space. 

    The shift to a cyberspace world means many human activities e.g. production, consumption, entertainment, art, socializing (Magnaghi, 2006) neglect place. Once ordinary physical contact has now become a superficial form of a phenomenon.     Johnathan Sri, Green's candidate for the Gabba ward recently organized a “cash mob” to take place at Charlie and Liz’s Family Fruit Market on October 1, 2015, which more than 100 people attended in a bid to raise the business’ profile and encourage regular shoppers.     Theorists explain the return to the certainties and reassurances of ideas of local community and cohesive identity as a reassertion and reclamation of a sense of control and connection to place, space and community during an epoch where communities are increasingly heterogenious, fragmented and threatened by changing social and globalised forces (Griffin, 2002, p.108).  
     
    I argue that Westender constructs and reinforces coherent and self-conscious identifications with the idea of community in West End as a process of re-territorialialisation in the wake of globalising and de-territorialising pressures.

Globalisation has dramatically altered the landscape and the working of the city, as businesses build global bases across the world. As discussed in the New Mobilities Paradigm, Sheller and Urry (2006) suggest globalisation has been possible through the increased mobility of people and resources, from improvements in overseas travel and interactions through the internet. Despatialization usually encompasses the globalisation of consumption, whereby global companies replace local, independent stores.

    When discussing this concept in relation to West End, it is clear to see how the process of despatialization has operated within this suburb. For example, the 2 7/11 shops on Vulture Street and Boundary Street respectively, are convenience stores, but in the past these would have been independent corner shops, which have now been bought out by this company. 7/11 is an American-Japanese international chain of convenience stores, which operates in 18 countries. This shows how with globalisation, this company has been able to make the leap overseas. Other chains seen in West End are Coles, the Gear Shop and Baskin Robbins.

    However one could argue that West End has been able to resist the pressures of despatialization, as the suburb's culture has helped retain the community stores under this process. West End is renown for its independent Greek and Chinese restaurants, which have acted as importance culture ties for the community. Some may argue that West End becoming 'gentrified' and 'hipsterified' has allow more independent cafes and stores to stay on the high street and resist the process of despatialization. Examples of these stores include Bent Books, Nook and the Happy Cabin. 

    Therefore this allows us to question the extent to which West End has been involved in the process of despatialization. Even though global chains have admittedly come in, they have exited alongside the independent, 'hipster' like shops, adding cultural variety to this suburb, and making West End the 'cool' suburb we know today.

This is because Deterritorialisation is the process of which involves undoing things which have already been done and taking control away from a place which has already been established.  Place (2012) considered that deterritorialisation has caused Aboriginal people to move from newly developed urban areas, as a result forcing them to reallocate elsewhere. When looking into West End, it could be considered that the Aboriginal community feel dislocated due to not being able to use the land as they had historically. This can be shown with the example and history of Boundary Street, which represented the boundary between both the Aboriginal people and white people (McGillvray, 2011). This can lead them feeling unwanted and excluded within the area.

Accessibility is contingent upon access to the Internet, and article submissions must be approved, meaning the voices of poorer, less-educated and homeless groups and individuals within West End are not represented. In this way, despite its seeming democratic nature, Westender is still "not a unified, monolithic entity that neatly encapsulates something designated as 'the local' by local consensus, but is rather the mercurial and heterogeneous outcome of different definitions of, first, news gathering and writing and, second, that which constitutes the local" (Griffin, 2002, p. 116).
