Tsim Sha Tsui (Pre-Colonial & Colonial)

In the early 1800s, Tsim Sha Tsui was first discovered as a largely undeveloped area with a few village houses, however, in the 1860s, a small ritual was held right in the area. This discovery of the area would soon completely change its poor, empty environment and start the development of TST.

The area was ceded to Britain under the Convention of Peking. Surprisingly, it took 19 years for it to be discovered, after Britain conquered Hong Kong.

The name Tsim Sha Tsui means ''sharp sandy point.'' There is no evidence for the reason for the name, however, there is a possibility it was given by the sharp-shaped sand of its beach.

After discovering the area, it was first used to ship the medical plant ''Heung Tree'' firstly to Hong Kong Island, then to Guangzhou, and eventually throughout the world. The colonial government had listed the area as a proper place to become a major commercial port for Hong Kong because of the convenience of how near it was to the Hong Kong side and the deepwater that allowed even large ships to drop anchor.

The 2nd step of development was when a large-scale project was established. The first project was the Kowloon-Canton Railways, an idea made early as 1864 by an engineer named Rowland Macdonald Stephenson, however, it took as long as 32 to persuade stakeholders for the concession to be granted. The railway was one of the first steps for the trade hub of Hong Kong. A South China Morning Post reporter once quoted ''Hong Kong is gradually reaching towards the developing wealth of China and Kowloon.'' The project's price, however, was $12 million dollars to make the Tsim Sha Tsui to Lo Wu rail link, with only 5 stations and a distance of 35km. The rail link was said to be the most expensive in the world at that time. Eventually, the Kowloon-Canton railway project was opened on the 1st of October 1910, after many struggles such as finding imported construction workers and dumping the huge amount of earth into Hung Hom Bay in order to reclaim the land and start the project.

Many projects were completed in Tsim Sha Tsui. The Holt's Wharf godown complex was also completed. Both of these completed projects had helped aid Tsim Sha Tsui become the busiest shipping port in the world during the 1960s. Soon, dozens of products were exported throughout the world and in return, many foreign goods such as heavy machinery weapons, and industrial products were imported.

The development of Tsim Sha Tsui from an undeveloped village area to the busiest shipping port in the world is an incredible development of a district, and the continuation of the projects had attracted more tourists to the city such as the Ocean Terminal and New World Centre.

There is barely any evidence of the old Tsim Sha Tsui that remains today, mainly because of the speedy rate of urbanization. However there is just one rare reminder of TST's history, and it is the Signal Hill Tower. The Signal Hill Tower was on the highest part of the district and was built in the year 1908.

https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/article/2124927/stories-behind-hong-kong-districts-tsim-sha-tsui-beach-reached-become

Religions & Rituals- In 1896, A group of Muslim garrisons who were stationed in the Kowloon peninsula requested their upper-ranked superior commanders for a site that would be large enough to have gatherings for at least several Thunder worshipers, specifically for ''Eid'' and ''Juma'' prayers. The request was granted, and a temporary site was given between Austin and Nathan Road.

Then after the site was getting contaminated in 1902, Col. E. G. Barrow gave permission to repair and repaint with the help of Major Berger.

There were also new features added to the Mosque, such as a concrete pool for growing water plants for worshipping.

The building remained as a place for Muslims to worship for 80 more years, however in 1976, it was severely damaged as a Rail station construction had occurred nearby. Later on the 11th of October, 1978The Public Works Works Department later declared it was so badly damaged, that it was certified as a dangerous building. Later on, the Incorporate Trustee had requested the Government in order to build a new Mosque to replace the old one for the sake of the development of the historical Mosque. The request was granted and the plans for the building of the new Mosque were improved on the 13th of October, 19978.

To this day, worshipers of the Mosque are still going strong, almost 1 million come every year. The Kowloon Mosque is one of the major landmarks in Hong Kong, a landmark that truly represents the Muslim Community's true identity.

http://www.islamictrusthk.org/mosques/kowloon-masjid/

Research Question: How has the cultural diversity of Tsim Sha Tsui evolved over time?

Tsim Sha Tsui during the 1950s used to be only an area of small villages and small seafront piers during the ancient Ming Dynasty time.

After the early 19th century TST had become...
- A major trade route
-A major provision point for sailing boats around the world in the TST peninsular
-Part of the reason why the First Opium War started

the Second Opium War started on the 18th of October 1860. The British seized the area of Kowloon, which was not handed back to Chinese hands until after a long 137 years (1997)

The 19th century was when Hong Kong island started getting overcrowded, which spread into Tsim Sha Tsui, where then people built housing and light industry more densely as warehouses and piers developed.

Another big turning point for TST happened on 1/10/1910 when the Kowloon to Canton railway had been established, built right on the waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui, and completed in 1915. This establishment had made trade and tourism possible in a way never before. You could travel by train from TST to London in a few weeks.

After TST was known for its nickname ''the Fragrant Harbour'', it was also used to describe Victoria Harbour, sometimes as well of the whole of HK. In 1819, it was said to be part of Tsim Sha Tsui with Tsim Sha Tau (Name no longer used). The district was also named ''Chien-Sha-Tsui.''

Then later in 1839, Tsim Sha Tsui was known for being a major provision point for sailors all around the world who came to trade in China, most often going up the Pearl River to Canton. The 7th of July was the day when a fierce conflict happened. The conflict between the British and Chinese Imperial authorities over the jurisdiction when foreigners had desecrated a local temple and argued with the locals over alcohol. 6 were arrested, and one was killed. The war had ended in 1842.

TST remains a tertial sector even from colonial days to the present. During the colonial days, transport, tourism & trading were the main business of the town. When port and rail facilities moved out, the industry fell on the latter two. Tsim Sha Tsui contains several centers of finance. The large tall skyscrapers you see right now in HK had been constructed after the Kai Tak Airport closed, which was the reason why height restrictions on buildings have dropped.

https://www.tsimshatsui.hk/history.html#.Yoo4SoJBw-Q
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsim_Sha_Tsui
