A Look Into the Incredible Minds of Creative Artists (Grades 2-3) by Emily Stickel

Through culturally diverse critical literacy, supplemental texts, and engagements, children will gain respect for the adversities artists and creative people had to overcome. Children will also develop an appreciation for creativity that may inspire them to take responsibility for bringing new creative ideas into our ever-evolving society. Ultimately their actions revolved around creativity, no matter how small, could bring new elements into our creative world. Our students are our future and in order to cultivate new ideas, they will need to be in touch with their creative side, as well as respectful and open to other's creativity.

Since children are learning about art I thought one great way children could experience art is through process based learning. Children will be given links to many videos of children and adults creating abstract art. I will also encourage students to find their own videos of abstract art being created. Usually an abstract artists has a unique way of moving paint, whether it's rolling pins and saran wrap, pom pom's, spatulas, swinging paint, moving paint with water, or a paint brush. Children will select a method they find inspiring, or create their own method and make their own abstract painting in their art class, or of course in the classroom in necessary. Children will then name their art project and write about the experience they had making art. Such questions will be considered by children: Why did you select the colors you choose? How did you choose to move paint? How do you feel when you look at your painting? This can be adhered to younger grades by having them create recordings of their experiences to their artwork. The children's art work can even be displayed for other students to respond to.
