For this pre assessment I had the students do a mini version of the big project they worked on. That way I could gauge how much work we had to do on citing evidence and making an argument.

One of the activities I did with my students is teach them the "chew and spit" method. This process is a fun way to teach kids how to discern what information is relevant and what information is garbage.

We used a JamBoard to organize our evidence for each idea that we came up with for our anchor text. This was very good for students on all levels. Even my advanced students had a hard time coming up with evidence. So this was a way we could insert our evidence chapter by chapter.

The last step before writing their essays was to fill out the outline template. I required that they write full sentences for their outline so all they had to do when it came time to write their essays is plug in the sentences in the correct order.

Here is a final draft from one of my advanced students. She earns the highest grades out of all of my students. She completed each step in the writing process, and asked questions whenever she wasn't sure about something. Her final product shows how hard she worked in the many exercises. I plan to save her essay to use as a model next year.

For my lower level students, I used the same exact process as I did for the advanced class. The only difference is I had them work on an informational essay instead of an argumentative essay. This is an example of the work I got back. After spring break we will spend a lot of time (probably another 2 weeks) working on these essays. As you can see, this one is not even in an essay format. I have to figure out another approach to getting my lower level students to write a proper essay.
