Often people are NOT really listening either because of preconceived ideas or distractions from life. And not listening in the sense of waiting to respond, but to absorb information and attempt to grow from what we don’t know. To feel faith and trust in strangers is challenging because of the judgments we grew up with.

The reactions made from humans, oftentimes, is a response created from a lack of understanding or the unknown. To work away from those responses, and allow others to feel safe, brave, supported, etc. we need to change the way that we listen and the way that we interpret “different.”

When everyone can freely express themselves, then we are able to discuss deeply and examine our own thoughts and feelings as well as others’. When we can do that, then we can grow as people and educators and help our students to as well.

Listen before speaking and Keep an open mind: There is so much discord when people don’t truly listen to what others have to say, and when they are so rigid in their thinking that they cannot attempt to see anothers’ point of view. Listen to others’ reasons for their thinking, seek to understand (not win an argument), and strive for empathy.

Mistakes will be made. I know personally, I have made many. None have come from a place of ill intent or hatred, but they were mistakes nonetheless. I want to improve and to better understand. I want my perceptions to change. If needed, I want to be called out. But, for that to safely happen, I need to know that it is a safe place and forgiveness will be given as the change happens.
