I chose this quote because it is the biggest cause of the Harlem Renaissance, especially in bigger cities. With the influx of many new black citizens, there was an obvious need to evolve artistically and overall creatively. This sudden growth led to new music, art, and literature never seen before.

I chose this quote because it perfectly represents the time after the 1920's. The government made a mistake in passing the Prohibition acts and that led to an enormous surge in organized crime throughout the nation. They fixed their mistake by essentially repealing the Prohibition acts in the 21st amendment. It is quite rare in history to see an authoritative group correct their mistakes,which is why the repealing of the Prohibition acts are so important. It has led the US to be a safer place, in terms of amount of crime, for all.

I chose this because- it actually does the exact opposite of what they were trying to accomplish for americas
society. The prohibition act actually made crime rates go up significantly and this also allowed gangs to make lots of money by selling it illegally.

In "Harlem in the Jazz Age" it takes about how the music during this time brought together the two races and it wasn't as segregated as society really was. It supplied many jobs for artists and it was "the evolution of American music." it also claimed in this article that the Harlem Renaissance "forced artists to come to terms with new definitions of race made possible in and through a variety of art forms." During this time African Americans could be themselves through their music and art and not be discriminated. They were treated more equally and had a more positive image.

An important quote I found was, "Harlem, a neighborhood in New York City, became the center for African American artists from 1910 to 1930." Harlem was a safe place for African Americans. They were free to express themselves without being discriminated against. They produced some extremely great pieces of art during the time and Harlem aloud them to do so. It paved the way for showing that racism was stupid and needed to be abolished because so many great artists were African American.

"January 1920, Congress enacted the 18th amendment to the Constitution”. The amendment banned the manufacturing, selling and transporting of alcohol. It was created to try and increase health of Americans. This amendment increased organized crime because mobs would smuggle alcohol and sell it for consumption. The amendment didn’t really stop the consumption of alcohol if just made it harder wealthy individuals would still buy alcohol and have large parties.

The quote that I choose was, “Richard Wright and Alain Locke criticized Hurston’s use of language as failing the African American by representing her or him as uneducated” (Harlem in the Jazz Age).
I found this quote he most interesting because it shows light to something that isn’t brought up that much. We always see how whites criticize and throw shame at African Americans. What we don’t see is African Americans criticizing other African Americans. In this case this is constructive critizism of African Americans poets critizing other poets to uphold to a moral standard so it represents all African Americans in a good light.
