Edmund Rice began his life in 1762 Callan, Ireland. During this period there was the establishment of the penal laws which prevented Christians from possessing things like land over a certain value, weapons and education. As a result of this, Edmund, who was Christian, had to gain his education from illegal travelling scholars known as Hedge School Masters who taught children like him. Edmund received his religious education from his parents. Rice's education followed with him attending a commercial academy before apprenticing in his uncle's business. 6 years went by of apprenticeship before Edmund's uncle died, leaving him in charge of the business. In 1787 Edmund married to his wife Mary Elliot. Unfortunately, mary died three years later whilst giving birth. The child was saved and was named Mary as well. Mary, Edmund's daughter, was one of the major factors which helped him through his grief over the death of his wife, but so was his devotion to spirituality. It was with the death of his wife that brought Edmund closer to God. In fact, it was in his grieving that he his eyes were opened to the many other people who were suffering just like him. Edmund, being a wealthy man himself from his business, saw in his heart that he had to do something about the various people living in poverty after being kicked off their land. So he began a Religious Order which later became the Congregation of Christian Brothers.

Prayer for the poor and needy
Lord God,
You came to give honour to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged.
You came to give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued.
You came to give a warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute. Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries. Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance. Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need. Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them. You came for the least, the lost and last of this world.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Amen.
This prayer would have been significant to Edmund Rice's mission as it speaks about helping the poor and helpless. Along with those who feel lesser in the community. These were the people that Edmund Rice was trying to support and give an educaton to.

A spiritual practice that Edmund Rice participated in was writing reflections in his bible often. Edmund wrote and made notes in many places in his Bible and these notes and reflections are all concerned with usury and economic justice for the poor.

Find some samples of your reformers writings (or people who have written about him) and explore:
why it was written
who it was written for (audience)
impact of the writing

"be intent on prayer and whatever may happen will turn to good. Cast all your cares into the arms of Divine Providence.’ Edmund Rice."
This was written to promote the message that by turning back to God all your worries and cares can be dealt with by God. Edmund would have spoken this to all his followers after experiencing this persoanlly through his return to God in his time of grief. The impact of writing or saying this is that people who have all their fears and worries bundled up within them can be relieved to know that by turning back to God he will help you and guide you. Pretty much he will take the weight from your shoulders.

"O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.
He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.
May we follow his example of faith and generosity.
Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund
As we seek to live lives of love and service.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen"
This prayer was written by followers of Edmund from a later age. It was written, so that all who read it could be reminded of the actions Edmund made and presented to those living in poverty. The audience it is aimed at were the people a part of that community, so that they could be filled with the spirit that Edmund's actions passed on. By writing this, all who read it are filled with the rememberance of the man who turned back to God in his time of mourning.

5. Investigation of Church responses in the 19th century that inspired the reformer.

Explore the Encyclical "Rerum Novarum" and the key ideas of the document/ response.
Identify which part of the encyclical may have inspired your reformer's work and HOW?

The Rerum Novarum by Pope Leo XIII addressed the new issues facing European society as a result of the Industrial Revolution and the social transformation this brought about. The five main key points that it discusses are private property, the right of the Church to speak on social issues, the role of the state, the worker's right to a just wage, and the importance of worker associations. Pope Leo XIII regards the worker's right to a wage as something highly necessary. He insists that all employees should be treated fairly, bosses should not take advantage of the poor and destitute, and if a boss should refuse to pay a man who has worked hard, God will be unhappy with them.
A part of this encyclical which may have inspired Edmund Rice was paragraph 22, line 6.
Private ownership, as we have seen, is the natural right of man, and to exercise that right, especially as members of society, is not only lawful, but absolutely necessary. "It is lawful," says St. Thomas Aquinas, "for a man to hold private property; and it is also necessary for the carrying on of human existence."" But if the question be asked: How must one's possessions be used? - the Church replies without hesitation in the words of the same holy Doctor: "Man should not consider his material possessions as his own, but as common to all, so as to share them without hesitation when others are in need. Whence the Apostle with, ‘Command the rich of this world... to offer with no stint, to apportion largely.’"(12) True, no one is commanded to distribute to others that which is required for his own needs and those of his household; nor even to give away what is reasonably required to keep up becomingly his condition in life...
These words could have inspired Rice as they suggest that all humans should have the right to have ownership of their belongings as it is, in their words, not only lawful, but necessary. This supports his belief that everyone should be granted education as an education would lead to the ability to earn money and the above message states that all man should be able to work for and keep their earnings.

6. Observations and examples that demonstrate his particpiation on the priestly, prophetic and kingly work of Jesus

Edmund Rice was consistently following Jesus' example of leading a life in a priestly, prophetic and kingly way
Priestly role- How did your reformer bring people together? Did they make sacrifices? How did they spend time in prayer and worship?
Edmund Rice brought people together through his belief that every person should be allowed the chance for an education. In his life Edmund made many sacrifices. Two of these were leaving the bringing up of his daughter in his step-sisters hands and using his wealth to support those without the chance of an education. In 1802, Edmund established a school for boys in Waterford on a property originally owned by his wife in a converted stable. The educating process was difficult for Edmund at first, but he made a system that allowed him and fellow educators to teach the students all about religion and other areas in groups of sometimes 150 each. Edmund was very devoted to wroshipping and was said to have prayed everyday. He also drove the idea of God into the boys at his school, so they too could fill out a life of loving your neighbour.
Prophetic role- A way in which Edmund spoke out against injustices was that he would go and preach to crowds about the poor level of education for children and how something had to be done. Although Edmund was quoted many times for speaking of love and how we serve God, it was through the use of his Bible that he tried to get most messgaes across. Edmund had to accept that he should spend time with his daughter as she grew up instead of travelling away to the next country to promote himself there. In the end, after much discussion with his step-sister Joan, Edmund made up his mind to devote himself and all he possessed to the project of educating poor youth.
Kingly role- Edmund used his influence to promote the love of God and the message to love one another through his schools. In his schools it was always somehow interweaved that the spiritual side was always referred to. Edmund invested so much into his schools. He bought shoes, hired tailors and provided food for the boys, so tha they could grow into matured young men. In doing this he showed that he loved them and his work and that if it were him receiving this he would be forever grateful.

7. Description of a 21st century group/individual who continues similar participation in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly roles of Jesus

What groups or individuals TODAY continue the same work/ mission as Edmund Rice and demonstrate the roles of Jesus?
The Smith Family organisation is a charity which works to support children in Australia, so they don't have to live in poverty.
Priestly- How did this group bring people together? Did they make sacrifices? How did they spend time in prayer and worship?
This group brings people together as the donators are able to support those less fortunate than themselves which helps them live like how Edmund Rice always wanted everyone to. Those who are being donated to are also brought closer to their peers as they now have the financials to encourage them to live life the way they want to instead of bound by the fear of not having enough money. Although this service does not necessarily promote prayer, it is through these actions that people are brought closer to God as they live their lives in a priestly manner.

Prophetic- How did this group speak out against injustice? What injustices did they speak out against? what things did they have to accept?
This group speaks out against injustice as their whole purpose is to stop children living in poverty and at a disadvantage to others. More and more people today are promoted to about the Smith family as well through the evolution of technology. Where once people would stand before a crowd and preach, the Smith family offers information on their website to encourage more people to offer their support.
Kingly- How did they use their power (influence) to promote the kingdom of god?
The Smith Family organisation also demonstates the kingly role through their influence on those donating and also those receiving the donations. Without the Smith family, children in Australia would still be left without an education and the resources that Edmund Rice worked so hard to achieve for his boys back in 1802. It is through these actions that the Smith family shows they work hard to exhibit the kingly roles and in doing this they promote the kingdom of God or the ability to love on another.
HOW do they achieve this? (use same questioning as section 6)
