Post a quote along with the page number from this section. Tell us why you thought this quote was interesting/worthy of annotation. Example:

"We were having this conversation on a fine summer eventing...You could see lots of aerials and satellite dishes, and sometimes, right over in the distance, a glistening line that was the sea" (pg 17).

This quote introduces a recurring theme of Kathy seeing some kind of boundary or "line" on the horizon. This represents how Kathy is trapped by her environment, but she doesn't even realize it -- she doesn't realize what freedom is or how to achieve it. The book will end with a kind of "line" in the distance as well.

Back when I could play outside all day and not be inside on technology. Back when I felt more free, and like I was actually living. I think this opinion is more negative, because it reflects the negatives in social media and technology today and in my life.Do you agree?

Of course, I don't regret any of the experiences I had, but I think it would just be better if nostalgia didn't exist so I wouldn't have to dwell on the past anymore. After reading my editorial and hearing the presentations, I really agreed with this idea about just focusing on the present and make the most of it, because you can't change the past.

I thought the table who did Stafford's editorial did well on the presentation. For example, young people now are already looking back on their childhood, regretting getting older. I feel like we should enjoy life in the moment or we wont fully experience it- we all grow old one day.

I would like to shout out table 1. I bet that was a beautiful place.” Then the next morning, when I was making conversation to keep his mind off it all, and I asked where he’d grown up, he mentioned some place in Dorset and his face beneath the blotches went into a completely new kind of grimace. And I realized how desperately he didn’t want reminding. Instead he wanted to hear about Hailsham.” (Pg 5)

This quote lays a foundation to how important of a place Hailsham is to experience. One of Kathys donors was in his last days, and instead of reminiscing of his past, he wanted to absorb hers like it was his own. This is an example of how some people aren’t nostalgic of their own past, but what COULD have came out of it.

I am nostalgic of beach trips. When I was younger my mom would always go to the beach with us, during the summer we would go 2/3 times a week, literally. I remember playing in the sand with my family friends, splashing in the waves of Indiana Dunes, and the specific firewood pizza and ice cream we would get after. Now that we are older and we have more responsibilities like sports and work, we do not have as much time to go to the beach.

Nostalgia is good, it reminds me to appreciate every bit I spend with my family and in nature. The beach is a nice place and I love to think about all the memories I made there. I know it all so well I could get there blindfolded.

Though sometimes we compare the past and the present, I feel like nostalgia makes me more appreciative of what I have in my life. Memories make me thankful for the people and things I have in my life. The presentations did not make me change my thought on nostalgia, though there were some good points.

2) I would like to shoutout Table 4 for their presentation. They were loud and made eye contact with class. The line of reasoning was really well explained.

When you think your current situation isn’t as good as you want it to be, you look to the past and romanticize it, even if it was just as bad or worse than the present. The presentations helped me think differently about it but mostly reinforced my opinion on nostalgia

Shoutout to the people who did Macquarie because even tho they rushed a bit their presentation was really good.

I watched carefully, but none of the others took up Arthur’s cue…There’d been no real change to Tommy’s work—his reputation for “creativity” was as low as ever”(pg.22).

This quote is important and interesting because it shows that all the boys started treating Tommy differently, despite the fact that he has not become better at art or more interested in it, his attitude has simply changed and now everyone treats him differently. So if it was Tommy’s lack of art was the reason why he started to get bullied, why is everyone treating him normal now when he hasn’t even tried to be better at art.

But she was afraid of us in the same way that someone might be afraid of spiders.”(35)

I found this quote worthy of annotation because it is the first real indication that there could be something serious going on with the Hailsham students. It makes the students involved feel as though they were aliens that will be looked at differently by people on the outside. The students initially thought that madame simply disliked them, but it turned out to be something much worse.

She’s already remembering the Hailsham pavilion, and then she remembers picture books from when she was even younger. This shows the audience how big of a theme nostalgia is going to be, and how important the concept of remembering is.

I agree with the questioning regarding how Mrs Lucy changed her mind about the fact Tommy is not creative. Creative most definitely has something to do with their future, carer or doner. I think that the more creativity the more likely you’ll be a doner instead of a carer. I thought of this because when you think about people, people would most likely save the smart and creative first during issues. So if you are creative you are more likely to get a carer job (Ex: Patricia C)

To add on to this I believe that the children aren’t real people, and they are some type of alternate organism that is closely related to a human. That is most likely why the people in charge don’t feel as if what they are doing is immoral.

I disagree with Jimmy’s statement of the students of Hailsham not being human. I believe the outside characters like Madame and some of the Guardians WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE they are not human. Madame views the students aliens going back to fearing them like a spider fear. Though on pg 72 “but she just went on standing there, sobbing and sobbing”.. except this time there was something else”. This quotes shows that maybe Madame cried because she saw a shred of humanism that way Kathy showed emotion in a song like another normal human being could show emotion from a song. This showed Madame that they are human and she realizes that despite how much the outsides try to dehumanize she keeps keeping humanistic evidence. More importantly students of Hailsham still have the same DNA for if they didn’t they wouldn’t have organs; they wouldn’t be living organ farms nor would they show empathy. Overall this seems to be a debatable topic as readers and characters.

I would add on by saying that yes she may scribble in the dark because she was frustrated, but I also came up with another thought that she became more distant from the other guardians because of her different thought process, which makes her more stressed, which is why she may cope with that by scrub bling.

I think Miss Lucy feels sorry for Tommy’s lack of creativity because it is very important at Hailsham to be creative. I believe Kathy wanted to be rebellious against the rules of Hailsham.

I agree with Grace about the Hailsham students viewing each other as family. With Kathy and Ruth’s relationship this may answer why Kathy constantly helps Ruth’s and doesn’t go against her. From keeping up with Ruth’s lies to taking Tommy when Ruth most definitely knows Kathy and Tommy were close. Kathy had an opportunity to “dethrone” the popular girl Ruth. But she didn’t on page 60“ for once she was at a complete loss for words and had turned away at the verge of tears”… “ all this effort, all this planning just upset, my dearest friend” .This shows how despite everything Kathy still doesn’t take the chance to put Ruth down because she clearly does care about Ruth and this can be because all they have is each other, they are their family.

However, I can guarantee that my first version was really good).

I agreed with Audrey when she said that Mrs. Lucy isn’t scribbling out of anger/frustration, but primarily because of worry. As Audrey said, Mrs. Lucy probably figured something out or learned something that made her panic and possibly regret what she told Tommy and potentially other students. My personal opinion is that Mrs. Lucy found out the real importance of being creative… Maybe the more creative you are, the longer you’re a carer. This could also be why Mrs. Lucy tells Tommy to forget everything.

There was one primary thing I disagreed with… Ruth being smart and good at chess. This was said by Suad, and I can personally verify that pieces don’t just go in L shapes in chess. Ruth isn’t smart, but as Amesley said, a pathological lair. Ruth makes up the facts of being good at chess and many other things to get attention- to seem more authoritative than she is. We see evidence of this when Ruth always tries to avoid teaching Kathy chess.

I Agree with him because we have seen all over the book Ruth wanting power. She was the person in the friend group who everyone wants to agree with. I can also mention how Ruth was secretive and a controlling leader of the secret guardians club. Ruth consistently is in positions of social power over her peers, and from these examples we can conclude that Ruth loves and wants power.

I agreed with Jolie and Chiamaka when they talk about how people humanized dogs, but dehumanize people who work in Chinese sweat shops. This is shown as early as when they first became friends with Kathy not being able to ride the pretend horse. She is a very self-centered person and isn’t a good friend to Kathy.

I disagree when Jolie said that the students at hailsham are fine with the fact that they will only live very short lives because they believe it is their purpose and they are doing something very important. I disagree, because I think they don’t understand the extent of the situation, especially because there were two kids talking to one another about what they wanted to do in the future. I think they are just ignorant, and the only reason they are so complacent with their situation is because they don’t know any better, and have been raised to not think more about it.

She started controlling what Kathy did and how she played with the so called “horses”. Ruth’s character throught out the plot so far likes taking thinks and being control. One could say she took Tommy from Kathy for example Ruth does state how Kathy and Tommy were/are so close. I believe Ruth deep down didn’t like that so she decided to take Tommy away. Again Ruth seems to be a power hungry selfish person.

Mrs. Lucy’s talk about all the students becoming donors is a period of transition from embracing happy childhood memories/being careless to accepting the solemn truth that they were going to die, that they weren’t normal, that their whole life was set out for them. I also think that this event is what resulted in Mrs. Lucy getting fired/vanishing. Since Mrs.Lucy probably strayed from the calculated leaking of information the other guardians managed, Hailsham supervisors/guardians probably didn’t like this, and dealt with the problem.

I don’t really know her name, but I have a feeling it was Percea Ball who said that the guardians have superpowers. I strongly disagree with this— I have a feeling that the guardians are outsiders with outstanding merits who had the opportunity to teach at such a special school like Hailsham… As for Mrs. Emily knows where everyone’s hiding and stuff, that probably comes from years of experience. I don’t think supernatural elements are in NLMG at all. I believe that that students have just been manipulated so that they don’t think how this is much different from the real outside world. With words like “special” be repeated and drilled into their brains they associated that good positive word to their own jobs. Such as them being seen as greater or heroes.

Therefore she looks at Kathy and despite Kathy not having many strong relationships people still like Kathy because she has kind traits and she has one meaningful relationship with Tommy. Tommy also has been said to tell Ruth about Kathy being a great friend. Overall it makes sense why Ruth will want to take Kathys traits because deep down she’s lonely.

I disagree with Suad (Sorry.. its the second time but its what jumped at me) that emotions result in Humanity, and that’s partially why the children could be humans. There are so many people in this world who lack emotions, epathy, and can’t sympathize. This wouldn’t make all of those people non-humans— just insensitive or awkward. I feel like the definition of humanity is being born from a real birth— no artificiality. This is similar to what Sophia said as well. However, I think emotions is partially what makes Madame cry when she sees Kathy dancing with the pillow. Kathy becomes humanized in her eyes.

I agree with Manny about the kids at Hailsham not being human. Yasmeen, I think, was arguing that the kids at Hailsham are people… As Manny so eloquently stated, the guardians keep using the word “Created”. In the previous round, Jolie talks about the students being clones, and I agree with this. That’s the only thing that would explain how there’s children that get “created”. Furthermore, students in Hailsham can’t have babies and have their whole lives set ahead of them— this just solidifies the fact that the students at Hailsham aren’t human.

The whole hailsham experience is similar to a boarding school and boarding school has to be paid for somehow. So since there has been no mention of parents who pay for the kids education, the whole operation has to be funded, so my guess is that the selling of the Donated organs is a very lucrative business and the people who reap the rewards of selling organ fund hailsham.

I agree with Emmanuel of the topic of the kids being created and the purpose Behind art and how it has significance towards how human the children are and to access how emotional and human like the kids are.

Their discussion made me think of a theory that the students were created as clones of people who are in the “real world” or just the world outside of these schools like hailsham. They were made from the same DNA of those people, so when their organs start failing they get to live longer. Maybe Madame is collecting art for the students benefit, in order to prove that they are smart and creative and actual people instead of just bags of meat for people to use without a second thought. The “evidence” Mrs. Lucy was talking about, and her reason for them needing to be creative is evidence that they could maybe be spared because it is evidence they are actually human and not something to be used for parts.

I disagree with Emanuel when he mentioned how he thinks it’s possible for the students to not be human, and he used the example that they were “created” I think they were possibly born in a lab for the purpose of raising to take their organs, but that still means they are human.

I disagree with Yasmin about the children/students of Hailsham being taken from their actual parents in the outside or real world. I believe that they were cloned. I believe if they were taken from their parents; want or not. There will be a notice of missing children and people around getting suspicious about it. Also clones makes more medically sense because if they wanted to increase the chances of better organ donation clones will suffice because it the same DNA and the bodies should accept the new organs. This being said I believe people who could afford it make their own clones to get the organs.

With Mr. Pyziks proposed question about authorities in Richards viewing us as not humanistic. I believe not necessarily but a view of us being stupid children and us being different then them and their generation. Often on social media or networks I view comments with a disdain tone about “gen z” ers. Also older generations talking about my/our generation comparing both generations and going g along the lines of “we were never like that” and etc.

(I thoughtI posted. it but pallet was being laggy)

I agree with Grace about Kathy being very questioning about things. I agree with Zavier with ms lucy telling them not in the calculated way they were supposed to, so that may have been why the guardians got rid of her

I disagree with what Nora said about ms lucy being crazy, because I feel like she was just really angry or frustrated, but not mad per se. She may have been scribbling things that were not good about Hailsham, so she was scribbling over them. On page 91 is said that she was shading like they do in Art.

round 2:

i kinda agree with caylin where ms lucy left of her own accord and Zofia where she was stressed about everything she knew. I agree about ms lucy favoring tommy. i agree about how ruth wanted a sense of self. i agree with Zofia about sales being a way for them to express themselves and also creativity.

i disagree with Suad about Ruth being llke someone who’s wise, because ruth lies a lot and is always trying to make herself important, like for example the problem is that ruth was bad at chess… that’s what kathy was emphasizing not chess making her smart

round 4

i agree with emmanuel him about lucy talking about them being created, and his arguments about them being created. i agree with london about.

Create a new post in which you share something you are nostalgic about. Try to explain why. I am nostalgic about this food whenever I eat it. I remember Ramadan and the traditions we have in Ramadan and the vibes. It’s a dessert called Qatayif basically this dessert is only made on Ramadan after fasting we eat it and if I eat it another day that’s not Ramadan I remember the vibes of Ramadan and the family gatherings.

Then, give your opinion on if this nostalgic feeling is a positive or negative force in your life.

It’s positive because it reminds me of good days and family gatherings and staying up late and going to the mosque.

“ I saw a few of the incidents myself. But mostly, I heard about them, and when I did, I quiz people until I get a more or less full account.” (Page 14)

This quote is important because I feel like it’s giving us foreshadowing of some answer Kathy is looking for it could be in the people around her at Halshiam because when she says “I quiz people” she is testing those people to find a answer to something she is looking for a question that’s she has or a mystery. But we can definitely tell that she’s is looking for something.
