It is the only community on King William Island. In 1829, Scottish explorer John Ross and his crew became trapped in ice. It was because of the assistance of the local Inuit that they survived. Gjoa Haven was also the location of the ill-fated John Franklin expedition in 1845. John Franklin and his crew perished without ever finding the Northwest Passage. He decided to name the community after his ship, Gjøa.

The park starts at the Natilik Heritage Centre and then to the former Hudsons Bay Compay site, The third area is Gjoa Haven proper, the fourth is a cairn dedicated to Amundsen, north of the inlet, with a bronze memorial plaque describing his life, his ship, and his journey. The fifth area, on the island's northwestern coast, is a gravesite that is believed to be one of the places that members of Sir John Franklin's crew were buried. The final area is a shelter where Amundsen made observations on the North Magnetic Pole, about 90 km north of Gjoa Haven

It is also the only migratory bird sanctuary within the Kitikmeot Region that protects species like the long-tailed duck, king wider, herring gull, loons, hawks, and owls.
