McCandless was, by all definition, a humanist. One with nature and the gifts of the Earth. He lived by his own choosing, by his own principles (only partially stolen from Jack London), and accepted the consequences and responsibilities of his desired life. Even though he chose to reject the people and blessings of the modern world, something Emerson might disagree with, he stays true to the roots of this ideal by making the most out of every action. He made connections, helped others, never asked of too much or left a good deed unrepaid. He brings peace to himself, by himself, and for himself, up until the end of his life.
