In general, we know that the setting is on a deserted, boat-shaped island, with a plentiful supply of food (fruit and some pigs) and water. There is also a lot of conflict going on in the story. This includes, but is not limited to, man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Man vs. man is the most obvious conflict going on, as the tension is at a constant high between the boys, with some, like Ralph and Piggy, trying to maintain order in hopes of being rescued, while others, like Jack, just want to have fun/hunt. Man vs. nature is another external conflict going on in the story, as although there are no real dangers on the island, the boys still have to make shelter and fire, along with gathering food and water to stay alive. The internal conflict going on in the story is man vs. self. The main reason why the main external conflict is happening (man vs. man), is all because of the internal problems within the boys. The littluns are scared of an unreal "beastie" and some of the bigguns are scared of not being rescued/ not having order. After being stranded on an island from a plane crash in the midst of World War II, there is no fragment of adult authority that the boys can turn to. As a result, they need to establish a civilized society with rules and regulations to even see the slightest chance of rescue. Throughout chapters one to six, Golding begins to portray the different temperaments of characters, that mount tension for future chapters. Ralph, the elected chief of the bunch, has been given an immense burden of sustaining rationality and order with the ultimate goal of being rescued. Jack, another main character, struggles to fight with the urge to hunt and kill. He is tainted by his controlling, ruthless personality, which stages a boiling desire for leadership and a rivalry against Ralph. Meanwhile, in the background, there is a beast that haunts the minds of all the boys on the island. Though it is likely not real, its savage and cruel nature seems to be getting to a few of the boys, including Jack. Like Golding described, "There was the brilliant world of hunting, tactics, fierce exhilaration, skill; and there was the world of longing and baffled commonsense" (Golding 71).
