         <description><![CDATA[<div>Foundation of Madagascar:<br>The island is first known to Europeans after being sighted in 1500 by a Portuguese ship on the new route to iIndia. In the 17th century Portuguese missionaries try to bring to the Malagasy the news of Christianity, and both Britain and France attempt to establish settlements. France was more successful and consequently the French language is still prominent today. Madagascar became a source of slaves, not only for the neighboring islands, but also for more distant points, including the Western Hemisphere.<br><br></div>]]></description>

He has faced extreme opposition with his parliament and within his first year dealt with the threat of impeachment, but had prevailed as president.&nbsp;</div><div>The multi-party which includes an executive branch with a president, prime minister, and cabinet, and a legislative branch with a Senate and a National Assembly.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
