At first the Iroquois lived close to lake Ontario and in New York State they were on the Mohawk River. Later on, about in the 1650’s, they started to push back their living into the area between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. To get this land they fought to push other native american tribes out. The reason why the Iroquois wanted more land was because they needed to hunt for deer and beaver, and the land that the Iroquois got was a better area to hunt those animals.

The Iroquois main type of shelter was the longhouse. The longhouse could be up to 300 feet long. Although the average longhouse was 60 feet long, 16 feet wide, and 15 feet high. The typical Iroquois longhouse was made from elm tree bark and bent tree saplings. Most of the time there were windows and a door made by cutting rectangular holes in the longhouse. In the winter animal fur was used for insulation.

They cooked the corn down into a porridge, and then they could mix it with beans and squash. Dried corn kernels were ground down to make flour for bread.

From the fall harvest, squash and pumpkins were cut into strips and dried for food in the winter.
For meat, the Iroquois caught lots of fish. They also hunted birds, small animals, and large hooved animals.
This Indian Tribe also gathered nuts and berries.

The Iroquoi Indians, or as they called themselves 'The People of the Longhouse', had one of the richest cultures ever. They relied on two main profits to say the words of the gods, Ayonwentah and Dekanawidah. They burned tobacco to carry their prayer to some of the lesser gods of good. During wartime, the Iroquois captured enemies and actually molded them into citizens; sometimes they even turned the captured into soldiers for vengence against enemies. Women and men had equal status in the society. In divorce the man is asked to leave the home and he must obey. The educators of the family were the matriarchs and there were no reports of domestic violence ever. Some of the festivals included the Maple, Planting, Strawberry, Green Corn, Harvest, and Mid-Winter (New Year's) festival. These mostly had to do with curing illness, celebrating harvest. Their main god was The Great Spirit.
