Most people drink for the stimulant effect, such as a beer or glass of wine taken to “loosen up.” But if a person consumes more than the body can handle, they then experience alcohol’s depressant effect. They start to feel “stupid” or lose coordination and control.

Alcohol overdose causes even more severe depressant effects (inability to feel pain, toxicity where the body vomits the poison, and finally unconsciousness or, worse, coma or death from severe toxic overdose). These reactions depend on how much is consumed and how quickly.

Tobacco is a nervous system stimulant that triggers complex biochemical and neurotransmitter disruptions. It elevates heart rate and blood pressure, constricts blood vessels, irritates lung tissue, and diminishes your ability to taste and smell.

In my family I have many of those who suffer from alcoholism, though there is one certain family member who suffers the most. She is extremely engrossed in her addiction and even denies it at times or blames it on anything else; it have become such a problem in my family that it isn't seen as a problem, it is seen as extremely normal and is a habit in my family tree. She has been drinking ever since she met a certain man in her life and even as she moved on her alcoholism from him did not, I have been there for all of it and have watched her go into this downward spiral and refuse treatment options such as therapy, asking for help, or even seeking other options that steer her away from drinking. But now she is doing much better, her drinking habits lowering more and more by the day to the point where she is nearly sober. She has even asked for help to decline alcoholic drinks whenever she goes out and has a tracker for her goals.
