The Sinclair family spends their summers on the island. There are four houses on Beechwood, Windemere for Penny, Red gate for Carrie, Cuddledown for Bess and Clairmont for Tipper and Harris. This setting can be connected to the theme wealth and greed. When this is an island owned by Harris who is very rich. The families can go to this island and be completely isolated from other people, consumed by their own drama and wealth. There is ocean around the island and the family can go to the beaches, swim, sit in kayaks and drive boats. They have servents working for them and the tone on Beechwood island is very peacefull, relaxing and calm. The Island might be a symbol of escape or the world of white privilage. Cadence longs to come to the island when she is home in Burlington. It seems as the island feels like an escape for other characters as well, on page 132 Mirren says "You know how, when you come to Beechwood, it's a different world? You dont have to be who you are back home. You can be somebody better, maybe." A lot of the times we hear about the value of stuff the characters own, they are all extremly privliged. Gat on the other hand is not a family member and he is the only one who talks about poverty. He comes from India and have seen how poverty affects the people. One night he says: How can we say land belongs to anyone? but his statement is rejected by Johnny and Mirren. Gat proceeds "Maybe land shouldnt belong to people at all. Or maybe there should be lmits on what they can own." He talks about an experience he had in India on a volunteer trip, when they were building toilets because the people in the village didnt have them. Johnny answers "We all know you went to India, you told us like 47 times" Which indicates that they arent interested in poverty. Gat ignores Johnny and keeps on talking "Im saying we should talk about it. Not everyone has private islands. Some people work on them. Some work in factories. Some dont have work." Some dont have food. It makes us fully understand the story and characters. We get a comprehension to why the characters behave like they did. Without understanding the context of your text, you cannot fully comprehend the views and values of the author, nor the overall meaning of a text. The way that themes, settings or characters are described and precieved can change our view on similar issues happening in the real world. Therefor do texts offer insight into a real world culture. In the novel, we recognize some social issues from the real world. One of the social issues found in we were liars is racism. The sinclair family is obsessed with keeping up appearances in a way that breeds racism and bigotry. Harris, who owns the Island and is extremely wealthy and priviliged seems to disslike Gat who is from South Asia an has indian descent. Harris might be symbolic of white privilige or the white people, while Gat can be symbolic of the people experiencing racism. Cadence is in love with Gat, he is smart, likes to read and sees the world differently than the other characters, which makes him a likable character. Since he is such a likable character, the readers take his side and makes us empathize with the kind of issue he (and what he symbolises) faces. Harris isnt directly racist, but we can see convert racism. Harris's bigotry is subtle enough to go unnoticed by most of the family, but Gat is well aware of his place as an outsider. Racism is still a big problem to this day, in 2019 about eight-in-ten black americans (78%) say the country hasnt gone far enough when it comes to giving black people equal rights with whites, and fully half say it's unlikely that the country will eventually achieve racial equality. We see huge contrasts between the characters as well, Harris who is a white, privilaged elder man who doesnt seem to care about poverty or other issues as long as it doesnt affect him. Gat on the other hand is young, talks a lot about issues like poverty and is from a working class backround. At one point in the book Gat says to Cadence "Everyone's white except me, Ginny and Paolo." Cadence asks "Who are Ginny and Paolo?" Gat has to tell her they're the staffs, who have worked on the island summer after summer.
