Week 1 Entry: Introductions and Belbin tests

In this session we took a Belbin test. We were told that these tests were an effective system to assign certain roles to workers as it would be the most effective way for them to work in a team. After taking the test I found out I tested equally on completer and organiser which I found to be quite truthful as I consider myself to be organised and like work to be perfect in their final stages. This allowed for us to understand each others roles in groups and therefore allow for more effective teamwork in future dates.

Week 2 Entry: Competition begins

In this session we made use of our roles established in the Belbin test through the creation of teams. As I was an organiser I was chosen as a team leader to choose different roles that would best suit our team needs. As a result of this the team members Kat and Maryan were chosen. Kat was a shaper while Maryan was a teamworker. This combination meant work would get done due to a teamworker, organiser and shaper were on the same time however we lacked more creative roles. As a direct result of this we solved this by using our collective ideas as a way to compensate for this - (which was effective as we had many ideas for our group). We were then made to produce different ideas for our cup, ranging from digital additions such as QR codes and alarms, to add-ons (like DLCS), where parts are replaceable (E.G. a cup warmer to a stablizer).

The day started with a bus chase after waking up at 7am.

The morning schedule of the conference consisted of talks of technology and emotional issues from the perspectives of different industrial figures.

The first talk was based on a new software that was efficient in being used to identify and debug coding errors for developing websites - and spoke of the disadvantages of previous software before this.

The second talk was based on the stress and mental health issues than can arise from work as a result of personal circumstances - in which a female artist found herself facing depression due a family death and living conditions. This talk highlighted to me the result of negligence and need to consult friends and professionals for mental health support if such issues occurred.

The next talk before lunch was based on the correlation between work and being burned out, where you lack energy and enthusiasm to work due to working circumstances. It encouraged workers to change industry or lifestyle in the attempt to regain energy and the ability to work at your own pace.

As I had woken up at 7am after going to sleep at 3am, my body at the time wanted to rest and due to this I went back to my flat instead of staying at the conference to get some well needed rest.

Week 4 Entry: Murdering our ideas and refining the cup project

During this lesson we made to refine our ideas for our cup to ensure they were realistic ideas. After questioning certain ideas and taking into account the new guidelines given to us (£40 max production cost, reusable and x), we decided to use our 'dlc' idea, in which different parts of the cup can be replaced for different needs such as a heater to heat the cup, or an alarm to alert the user when they need to do something. We decided to make this removable feature at the bottom of the cup, alongside allowing for a connectable handle and a slider lid as the physical design, including different digital assets as well such as a speaker. We chose a blue and black colour scheme alongside this. After achieving this we discussed different designs for our cup poster/info graphic - with a logo and name (Modulari). We went around discussing and looking at others peoples works, adding ideas and critiquing designs to help each other. We found our design needed to include important details such as prices and different information such as access to QR codes. After doing this task our lesson was over and Maryan took our design for next time.

Week 5 Entry: Introduced to Sketchup (3D modelling)

In this session, we were introduced to the software Sketchup. We have to use this software to design a 3d model of our desired cup after weeks of planning to be 3d printed. This was my first time engaging in the use of this software, and had to use a cheat sheet provided by the staff on blackboard to understand different ways to design the cup to our needs. This required a base, a middle holder and a slider lid. Before we could do this however, we were required to take measurements on how large we intended each part of the mug to be and how much the cup will be able to hold. We decided the holder would be the equivalent to a medium coffee cup, around 550ml. This meant the size of the holder would x cm in width and x cm in height. Alongside this, we decided that the lid would be x in size and the base would x. This planning allowed us to measure the sizes of the cylinders in the software to ensure the cup would be printed correctly. This exercise of planning and creating lasted most of the lesson and helped us visualise our cup.

Week 6 Entry: Introduced to video production

In this session, we were introduced to the assignment of creating a video to 'advertise', or in other terms, show off, our cup and why they should invest in the idea. We discussed in our groups after being given a storyboard what ideas would be best to show off our ideas. We collectively agreed in the use of the torture method - where we describe the dangers of contemporary cups provided by mainstream cafes such as Starbucks, such as pollution, and then presented our cup as the better option. We suggested ways of achieving this, such as a narrative voice in a customers head as they buying the cup. Alongside this we also were introduced to video software, Premier Pro, and industry level cameras, audio recorders and bipods to help achieve this. In the next lesson we'll discuss where when and how to record and edit our recordings.

Week 7: Catching up on work

In this session, we were given 2 hours instead of 4 hours to complete and catch up on different pieces of work. In my case, I spent my time using Sketchup to design the 3D model of my cup. This required looking towards my group mates for help in how to complete certain tasks - such as making the lid. Due to making each invididual piece of the lid being too time-consuming, the tool xx was used which meant we drew the outline of our lid and then used xx to solidify and give the lines a shape. In this session I also was able to confirm the sizes and dimensions of our cup - with the lid and base being 2 cm in height while the holder was 10cm. The radius of the holder and base was 4cm while the lid was 4.7cm to ensure it was big enough to fit on the holder. I designed the base of the cup to be able to clip onto the bottom of the holder, although in the original design we intended to use a magnet to attach the two pieces. I found using Sketchup as a hard software to use at an amateur level in which learning while using the software was the best way to make progress - such as only learning to orbit and pan with the mouse (hold down the scroll and alt click) instead of consistently changing tools at the end of the session. In this session a lot of progress was made - finishing almost all of the 3D modelling necessary before sending the design to print.
