Theme in Marley

One of the many themes in the book, was the importance of family. Their family started off by adopting Marley, he made then realize that they wanted children even though he was a mess. Another theme was, make the best of the unexpected. The characters never knew what Marley was going to do, so they have to make the best out of what Marley does. They also had to make the best out of finding out that Marley's stomach had twisted the first time and that if it had twisted again he would most likely pass away. There was always the uncertainty of it flipping again. The last and most important theme is love. The Grogan family has so much love for each other and Marley, for instance we realize how much we love someone when we come close to not having them or don't have them any more. After his stomach got twisted the first time they realized that the end was near for Marley, and tried to spend as much time with his as possible.

This picture is of Marley and John Grogan. I chose this pictures, because you can tell how much they love each other, they truly are family.

Connections to the characters

I relate to the Grogan kids more than the parents, since I grew up with two dogs in the house I never knew what it was like not to have a dog around until they passed, just like Marley did. They have that same feeling of not knowing if Marley was going to come back from the vet or not. I can connect to all the characters emotionally. Especially, when they find out Marley's stomach had flipped the second time, and there was nothing the doctors could do to save him. I had found out that my dogs had cancer and there was nothing they could do about it either. I also relate to the story by having crazy, but loving dogs.

Conflicts in the book

They had many small conflicts in the book, since Marley was a crazy, out rages dog. One conflict they had happens during Marley's first night with a thunderstorm. He had tore through their garage. The next conflict was when John had gotten Jenny a gold necklace and Marley decided he was going to eat it. John had wait for Marley to poop it out. Another conflict was when they went to an obedience class and go kicked out since he was so bad. Marley also liked to attack the mail man. The main conflict is when they found out that Marley's stomach had twisted and he might not live. He lived through it flipping the first time. But, sadly it flipped again and Marley was so old that his body couldn't recover.

The picture is a scene from the movie when they find Marley sitting in the mess he had created in the garage.

Quotes that are important in the book

The first quote is from page 54, " It wasn't even close to being large enough to be the missing jewelry, yet clearly it did not seem to belong there. I pinned it down with my probing branch and gave the object a strong blast from the hose nozzle. As the water washed it clean, I got a glimmer of something exceptionally bright and shiny. Eureka! I had struck gold." This quote is from when John found Jenny's missing necklace in Marley's poop. This was the first time that Marley had done something really foolish. The next quote is on page 83 is says " Marley was on screen for less than two minutes. But they were definitly two of the livelier minutes in the film. We laughed! We cried! We cheered!" I chose this quote because it was the first time that the family knew he could do something besides just being crazy all the time. The next quote is on page 158 it says "Dr. Hopkinson's said Marley's stomach had bloated with food, water, and air. It had flipped over on itself, twisting and trapping it's contents." This is a life changing quote for Marley. Marley was able to make it through that first stomach flip, but he was to weak to do it again. The next quote is from page 182 when John was talking to Marley " You know all that stuff we've always said about you?" I whispered. " What a total pain you are? Don't believe it for a minute, Marley." He needed to know that, and something more, too There was something I had never told him, that no one ever had. I wanted him to hear it before he went."Marley," I said. "You are a great dog." This shows the love that John has for Marley, and that he has always taken Marley for granted. But, know that he's having to picture his life without Marley he can't.
