6.TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

If  one of the main objectives in our teaching is using a  competence-based approach, it means that we should teach our student to  work out and use their own learning strategies  both individually in their self study and while working in groups.  This implies we should  choose motivating, creative, task based  activities that activate also student’s digital skills. 
So if students have to learn to learn, teachers have to plan carefully their work and their strategies too.

The video, of course, gives the insight of the theory on competences. `Learning to learn` caught my interest. I`m going to watch the video again, to understand it better. And let’s see where this learning will lead. At least I will improve my English:-)

Their are more motiveted when they are engaged in a problem –solving approch and some trasversal comptences like learn to learn or digital competences can let to create an European citizen.

I teach French in a secondary school and when my students know why they learn this language and what they can do with they have good results.

The European Union Framework provides 8 Key Competences to be developped through the school curriculum. I think the most relevant is “Learn to learn” as it allows to pursue and persist in learning, to organise one's own learning, including through effective management of time and information, both individually and in groups. In fact in terms of essential knowledge it requires an individual to know and understand his/her preferred learning strategies, and the strengths and weaknesses of his/her skills and qualifications. On the other hand, in terms of essential skills it requires the acquisition of the fundamental basic skills such as literacy, numeracy and ICT skills that are necessary for further learning.

Very interesting this video. I strongly believe that school education (in Italy at least) has to change, It must follow the changings of society! Not only because it has to mould the new citizenship, but also because I think that if we don-t start talking the same language as our students, if we don-t start living in the same reality, we would never reach their minds, transmit them messages, teach them! 

I agree with the speaker when she says that the most important competence is –learning to learn-. In my opinion the central point is to rouse in our students the awareness of their learning process, their needs, strength and weaknesses in order to make them autonomous students,  self confident persons and competent workers. ������8nB_�

Most of the messages are from Italy, does it mean we are not so prepared to work on the subject? 

This year, s a team of teachers, we’ve been asked to work on a project based on “reality”, this is one of the reason I attend “ the 21st century competences “ course; I have a lot of things to learn, also from all of you !

Collaboration and interpersonal skills - Demonstrating the capabilities of teamwork and leadership; adapt to different roles and responsibilities; productive collaboration with others; Conduct empathetic; respect for other viewpoints.

Identifying, formulating and solving problemelor- ability to identify, formulate, analyze and solve problems.

Monitoring formare- self-understanding of their needs and learning; locating appropriate resources; transfer knowledge from one domain to another.

Sociale responsibility Acting responsibly, taking into account the interests of the community; demonstrating ethical behavior in contexts related to their person, workplace and community.

 

With this video, we get to know the eight major key competences for lifelong learning: 

1) Communication in the mother tongue; 
2) Communication in foreign languages; 

3) Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology; 

4) Digital competence; 

5) Learning to learn; 

6) Social and civic competences; 

7) Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; 

8) Cultural awareness and expression.

I'm eager to put my individual key competences to the test while engaging in this 'online-learning-together' experience!

We have to change our teaching methods so that students develop skills needed in today’s society. Therefore I’m very interested in learning more about this subject.

The 8 Key Competences: 

 - Communication in the mother tongue 
 - Communication in foreign languages 
 - Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology 
 - Digital competence 
 - Learning to learn 
 - Social and civic competences 
 - Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship 
 - Cultural awareness and expression
So, in the new century we must approach a new way of teaching…..prepare students for the world of work.

This competence-based learning is very important because it allows students to prepare themselves in a very different way, when comparing to curriculum-based learning.

They are familiar with what they learn; they participate in the process instead of listening or seeing someone that is telling them what they should do… It’s much more interesting… 

In an information-age society dominated by technology and digital literacies traditional content-based approach no longer meets the needs of students. To be fully prepared (personally, socially and professionally) to face the the demanding challenges of today's world they need a key competence approach. Learning not just for school, but for life. 

If to be or not to be competente makes all the difference, then it is necessary to define and enlighten the concept of competence as well as its framework. There are many international competence frameworks and different definitions of “competence”. According the European Union’s Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, developed by the European Commission in consultation with all member states, 

 

“A competence refers to a complex combination of knowledge, skills, understanding, values, attitudes and desire which lead to effective, embodied human action in the world in a particular domain.”

With regard to competence frameworks, it seems to me that The European Union Framework is a good working basis and a useful tool to national frameworks. It proposes 8 interrelated Key Competences associated with transversal skills - critical thinking, creativity, initiative, problem solving, risk assessment, decision taking and the constructive management of feelings. 
The complex notion of the concept (within the framework of competence-based learning), implies significant changes in the process of teaching and learning. For exemple, it requires:

 - Rethinking traditional school (including equipment and physical spaces); 

- Creating (choosing ou adapting) a framework and a set of key competences to work with, including important transversal skills; 

- Strengthening interdisciplinarity and collaboration “inter pares” in the classroom;

- Reflecting on the role and assessment of non-formal and informal education;

- Rethinking the evaluation (methods, procedures and tools), reinforcing self-assessment, a fundamental skill for the development of learning to learn competence, considered the foundation of all learning.

In short, making use of the four categories proposed by ATC21S (Assessment and Teaching of 21st Century Skills project), we could say that 21st Century schools ought to focus their attention on “ways of thinking”, “ways of working”,” tools for working” and “ways of living in the world”. 

As it can be seen in the schedule attached to this post, ATC21S defined ten 21st-century skills into four broad categories. These have been grouped under the acronym KSAVE: knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and ethics.

First let me apologise for the late post. I’ve started working in a new school and there were tons of things to do… I really enjoyed the video, it had lots of interesting ideas. I’m an English primary teacher (English as a foreign language) and I teach very young children (6 and 7 years old) so the part that really caught my attention was learning to learn and learning foreign languages. My kids are still very young but I guess I could facilitate some activities where they would start to know themselves and also start to “awake” their cultural awareness.
