"Another study found that three or more incidents of intense stress within a year (for example, serious financial trouble, being fired, or a divorce) triples the death rate in socially isolated middle-aged men, but it has no impact on the death rate of men with many close relationships"

Reading this was very surprising to me. This just goes to show you how important relationships are. I am glad that I maintain close relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.

"Even though the open-loop is so much a part of our lives, we usually don’t notice the process."

We're able to influence students without being blatant or direct - and a lot of times, they need that. Our students have a lot of concerns about saving face. Our ability to manage and influence emotions/moods without calling attention to the action is crucial to classroom management and building the relationship with the students.

"people in meetings together ended up sharing moods – both good and bad – within two hours"

Short quote but it makes me reflect on the number of students who aren't necessarily 'good at school' who absolutely love to come- even when it is hard to do so. The drive to socialize may come from a desire to lift their moods.

Groups, therefore, like individuals, ride emotional rollercoasters, sharing everything from jealousy to angst to euphoria

This is something that I think all teachers need to remember. We have the ability to influence the mood of our class. We need to be aware of our own emotions and how that can impact our students.

"...even completely nonverbal expressiveness can affect other people. For example, when three strangers sit facing one other in silence for a minute or two, the most emotionally expressive of the three transmits his or her mood to the other two – without a single word being spoken."

This passage resonated with me because it makes me think of how simply smiling at someone can positively impact their mood without even needing to say a word. It makes me think that I need to be conscious and cognizant of my non-verbal expressions of emotions when interacting with students and colleagues.

"we rely on connections with other people to determine our moods"

This quote stood out to me because this is something I have been working on lately. While our moods are reliant on connections with other people, it is important that we do not let others control our emotions.

I have been working hard to not let others control my behavior. This is something that we preach to students all the time - "you are the only one that can control your actions." It is a lot easier to say it than it is to live it.

group members inevitably “catch” feelings from one another.

I find this so true on many levels. If I am around colleagues/friends and they are in a good mood, that makes my mood more positive. If I am around the "Debby Downers" of the group....I become a "Debby."

Same holds true for kids. If they are in a safe uplifting classroom, they will rely on those connections and their mood often changes. Whether we believe it or not, our classrooms determine the moods of our students.

-"Scientists have captured the attunement of emotions in the laboratory by measuring the physiology – such as heart rate – of two people sharing a good conversation. As the interaction begins, their bodies operate at different rhythms. But after 15 minutes, the physiological profiles of their bodies look remarkably similar."
As a Health teacher I really want to try this in class. Have the students take their heart rates at the beginning of class and then at the end for a week. Mine too!
