- The subject, being the author, uses her own personal experience to describe and portray what the time period of the Civil Rights Movement was like when she was alive. We are viewing the perspective of the author as a child, and we see her life as she gets older during this time period.

- The topic at hand, being racism and segregation during the 1960s is something children may not know about.
