The bases are the steps of the ladder. The sugars and phosphates are used to form the rails of the ladder. Top strands run from 5' to 3' bottom strands runs in the opposite direction from 3' to 5'. The blue gummy bear (G) always goes the gummy bear (C) and Orange gummy bear (A) goes with the purple gummy bear (T) .

in this lab , the DNA is a double stranded  (double helix ) . A chain of phosphate groups and sugars form the sides of the ladder . The steps of the ladder are the bases. In the top strands they run 5 to 3 . The bottom strand runs 3 to 5 .

We used a blue gummy for A, a peach gummy for T, a yellow gummy for G, and a purple gummy for C; also, we used the red licorice string as a phosphate and the black licorice as a sugar. DNA  is a double stranded molecule that has a double helix shape.
