The Novel “Huckleberry Finn” and the play, “Big River” show the theme in the same way. The theme is based on the motif of : Friendship. Don’t be mean to someone even though they are different from you because then you will get helped in return. This theme is showed by both the novel and play in the same and different ways.
The theme is showed in the play when in the rising action Huck tricked a white man to give him a gold coin to help a faking sick Jim to take a boat to freedom. The play states, “Here a gold coin for your troubles, he’s got the measles. I’m sorry that’s all I can do.” Just before this Huck made and a joke the was mean. This’s Important because Jim could have left Huck because of his rudeness. Later on Jim helps Huck by giving him a fancy dinner and allowing Huck to trust him not to run when he leaves the raft. In the play it states, “Stay here Jim I will be back soon.” This shows the theme because Huck: a white man who is different from Jim a: black man and Huck helped Jim go to freedom and in return Jim didn’t leave him.
The novel shows the same theme in the climax when Huck meets Jim on the island and Huck promises to not tell anybody that Jim ran away. The text states, “ Huck I am glad to see you, promise you won’t tell anyone that I ran away.” “Ok, Huck replied.” In return Jim allowed him to stay with him and eat. The text states, “After eating a big breakfast made by Jim they went on the raft.” This shows the theme because Huck- A White man helped Jim-A black man by having Jim gain his trust. In return Jim helped by feeding Huck and allowing him to not be lonely by traveling with him. This is what me theme is about.
The book and the play show the theme in different ways because in the play they show the theme by acting it out like, rowing and in the book they write about it like, “Promise you won’t tell Huck.” This shows the play and book show the theme in a different way because acting and writing are two different things. The play and book show the theme in the same way by Jim making meals. In the play Jim makes Huck dinner “Jim made a large dinner” and in the book he makes Huck a breakfast, “After eating a large breakfest.” This shows how the book and play show the theme in the same way because in both Jim helped Huck by making a meal.

The physical setting of the novel and play was shown in similar and different ways. One setting of the novel and play was the Mississippi River.
This physical setting was shown during the play by a map in the background that showed the Mississippi and places where Huck and Jim traveled. Also a few times in the play Jim would get the oar which showed their were on a river. Lastly, the play director had people move the raft when Huck went to shore. This shows the setting because a raft, map of the Mississippi, and a oar all relate to a river and in this case because of the map we know it was the Mississippi River.
The novel shows the same theme by describing the river as “Much deeper than in normals was.” Also in the book the author states Huck went to the river to fish and made breakfast for his pap each morning in St. Petersburg.” This shows that the physical setting was the Mississippi river because it states he fished a lot which means you are near a river and I know it is the Mississippi because St. Petersburg is along the Mississippi River.
The play shows the physical setting differently from the novel because in the novel their is no physical raft for the characters to be on. Also in the play their was people moving the raft acting like the river and the book doesn’t have people acting like a river. Lastly, in the play Huck and Jim use a real stick but in the book it doesn’t say that they used one. This shows all the ways the novel and play show the setting in different ways.
The play and the book show the setting in the same way because both show that the river is part of there daily life: by living on a raft and catching fish from the river. Another way is both the play and novel show that Huck and Finn camped next to the river by stating, “Then we stop to eat and catch some sleep.
These ways show how the play and the novel represent the physical setting in the same way.

The Novel and Play show some same and different parts of the plot. One example is in the Play they don’t act out the part where Huck’s Father steals his one dollar to buy whiskey. His father said, “Give me your dollar!” This shows that part of the plot because his father asked him for money which is what this part of the plot is about. Also in the play they don’t act the part where his father beats him up when he got drunk. In the book Huck said, “That day he almost killed me with his knife when he got drunk.” This shows the part of the plot because almost killing someone with a knife while you are drunk is like beating them, which is what this part of the plot is all about. Lastly, they don’t act the part where Huck fakes his own death to escape his father. “I climbed up and killed a pig to show pap that I was dead.” This shows this part of the plot because killing a pig to show blood is a way to trick someone to think you are dead, which is what this part of the plot is all about.
The parts of the plot that are in the play and not the book is when the widow sings about Huck should be educated. She sings, “If you don’t get educated you will never be a man.” The book only talks about what the widow says like, “The widow was very sad that I had not been educated, then she told me to start of for school.” This shows the play has different parts of the plot than the book because the play has singing and the book doesn’t. One other way the play shows a different part of the plot than the book is when the cons tell Huck and Jim that they are Kings and dukes. In the play they sing it to Huck. They say, “Here I am poor but I should be the King Of France!!!” In the book they talk about this to Huck, for example, “I should be the duke of England.” This shows how the play and book show different parts of the plot because one tells it by singing and the book by talking which includes different words therefore changing the plot.

Both the novel and the play show some similar parts of the plot. For example the play shows the part when the two cons ask to come on the raft in the rising action. The book talks about the same part. It said, “then two cons asked to get on.” This shows that part of the plot because it talks about cons asking to get on a raft just like the part in the story. Another part of the plot that is show in the play and book is when Tom Sawyer’s Aunt and Uncle mistake him for Tom Sawyer. In the play and the book he narrated, “Uncle and Aunt Sawyer thought that I was their Tom.” This shows that part of the plot because saying straightforward that they think you are Tom is just like what the part is. One last part from the long rising action is when Huck meets Jim on a island. The book and the play both use the exact words, “Hello, Jim. Am I glad to see you!” and also Huck said, “How did you get on this island.” This shows that part of the plot because saying hello is meeting someone and asking why they are on the island shows they met at the island.
In this page you learned how the book and play show the same and different parts of the plot.
