INTRODUCTION

The Issue of Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is a hot topic which shows no signs of abating. Media messages regarding the ever increasing weight gain of children today and their poor state of nutrition are becoming ever more prevalent – epitomised by the recent TV programme, 'Jamie's School Dinners' documenting his battle against the Turkey Twizzler. The World Health Organisation (WHO) last year described the problem as a ”global epidemic” 1 and certainly their published statistics are disturbing. Over 22 million children under 5 years of age can be described as 'severely overweight' and amongst children of a school age this figure rises to 155 million (2). In the European Union there are 14 million overweight school-age children, of whom 3 million are obese (3).

The generation of children growing up today are often referred to as digital natives but television continues to play a major role in their lives. That much was evident from a variety of research presented at the MRS Kids and Youth Research Conference held in London in January 2016. There's no doubt, however, that their relationship with the medium is changing.
http://www.warc.com/Content/ContentViewer.aspx?MasterContentRef=13f66892-57c8-4497-9257-9a1eb23b93b7&q=children&CID=A106706&PUB=EVENT-REPORTS

US children's book landscapeNielsen, April 2015.This report presents data on children's book-buying in the US and offers key takeaways for marketers. View SummaryThis report presents data on children's book-buying in the US and offers key takeaways for marketers.Females are the primary purchasers of children's books, they over-index in the under 45 age group and Hispanic families are 27% more likely to buy books for their children.Brands such as Minecraft, the video game, and Disney, the entertainment company, are driving growth in the non-fiction category.In-person modes of discovery, such as store placement, book fairs, and partnerships with librarians and teachers, remain critical.Children's books are not being purchased in digital formats to the same extent as all books are, although the gap between the two is shrinking.

As the role of children in society becomes more prominent, their participation in research seems set to increase. In this paper we review whether we are getting the ethics ofchildren’s research right. We show that, since the late 1980s, children have been treated universally as a special case and that they have been accorded their own special set of human rights (UNCRC), which primarily grants them rights to protection and participation. We go on to argue (with practical examples) that the core MRS research principles of well-being, voluntary informed consent and privacy/confidentiality must be applied tochildren with particular caution and care. We note that, as research with children grows and as new techniques are developed, we are presented with fresh challenges for keeping children safe and maintaining their trust. We end by presenting the results of a survey that sought children’s views on being research participants in a quite sensitive piece of research. We found that children are highly appreciative of being consulted about their lives in general and being asked about their feelings. However we also found that some children can be uncomfortable with some of the issues raised and can feel compelled to answer the questions. We conclude that, while we have good industry codes, ethics evolves with shifting social, political and cultural patterns, and we need to keep challenging ourselves to maintain best practice.

The impact of event sponsorship on Portuguese children’s brand image and purchase intentions: The moderator effects of product involvement and brand familiarity

The goal of this study is to understand the influence of event sponsorship on children and their ability to fully understand its persuasive intent. A wide range of research addresses the effects of sponsorship on adults, but not much looks at children. We study the effects of sponsorship on a new target: children between the ages of 7 and 11. We analyse effects on the sponsor’s brand image and on purchase intentions, and study the moderator effects of product involvement and brand familiarity. A structured questionnaire was completed by a sample of 334 children in the defined age range. Findings suggest that sponsorship can influence children’s image of the advertised brand and their purchasing intentions, especially in the case of non-familiar brands. Additionally, our research suggests that sponsorship can affect the purchasing intention for low-involvement products, while brand image is more affected in the case of high-involvement products, contrary to our expectations. Moreover, results show that the majority of childrendo not recognize sponsorship’s persuasive intent, and therefore our research has important managerial implications, highlighting the caution that should be used in the case of sponsoring activities with children.
