Galen dissects apes, monkeys, cows, and dogs. Galen did this to discover human anatomy. The reason he dissected animals was because dissections where prohibited at the time for humans. At the time, he used to encourage his students to look at dead bodies or gladiators that would wash up. He encouraged his students to do this because it helped to get a better understanding on the human body.

During the Dark Ages, scholarships and learning in Western Europe were controlled by the infallible authority of the Christian Church. Manuscripts and books were moved further to the East where they were being translated into Arabic, Syriac, Farsi, and copied to Southern Italy, and throughout the Islamic. This all happened during the Islamic Golden Age also known as the Middle Ages of medicine. Many of the imported documents were translated. Galens manuscripts have been translated by numerous schools and scholars throughout the years, especially right after his death.

The ancient Roman physician gained most of their knowledge of anatomy of the human body by treating wounded gladiators. Which limited what they were learning about the human body but that is all they were able to get their information from. At this specific time, all they have known what is the importance of the spinal cord, motor and sensory loss, the liquor ligation of peripheral nerve and the function of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, as well as how blood must pass from the right and the left side of the heart.

In 1000ce a educational revival began in Europe with foundations of medical school knowledge. This occurred in Schola Medica Salernitana in Salerno medical school. They imported important translations of medical knowledge from Muslim & Arab scholars. Two centuries later the University of Bologna which was a law school, absorbed medicine and many other types of disciplines into its curriculum. Post martens were carried there for medical legal reasons, which lead to interest in anatomy dissections.
