Tristan Tzara, de son vrai nom Samuel Rosenstock, né le 16 avril 1896 à Moinești en Roumanie, et mort le 24 décembre 1963 dans le 7^e arrondissement de Paris, est un écrivain, poète et essayiste de langues roumaine et française et l'un des fondateurs du mouvement Dada dont il sera par la suite le chef de file.

Il a participé à la naissance du mot « Dada » à Zurich et a été le plus actif propagandiste du mouvement. La légende veut que Tzara et Huelsenbeck aient glissé un papier au hasard dans un dictionnaire Larousse, qui serait tombé sur le mot Dada, donc choisi comme nom du mouvement. Huelsenbeck, autre fondateur du mouvement dada, prétend en 1922, dans son histoire du dadaïsme, que Tzara n'a jamais été dadaïste (ce qui s'explique par la rivalité qui régulièrement les opposera), tandis que certains poètes contemporains voient en Tzara le chef de file de l'art nouveau.

S'ouvre une galerie Dada, où Tzara prononce des conférences sur l'art nouveau, et notamment l'art abstrait. Il publie également quatre livraisons de la revue Dada, qui obtient rapidement une audience internationale¹⁰.

Il a écrit lui-même les premiers textes « Dada » :

The Lady of Shalott (Waterhouse, 1888)
The Lady of Shalott is a poem by Alfred Tennyson, written 50 years before Waterhouse painted this picture. The Lady of Shalott is cursed and forced to stay in a tower. She is only allowed to look at the world through a reflection in the mirror. One day, she sees a knight, Sir Lancelot, and falls in love with him. She ignores the curse and leaves the tower to find him, which results in her death. Lady of Shalott’s story can be read as a warning about female desire. Victorian society had strict rules and expectations for women that defined ‘acceptable’ behaviour.

The landscape setting is highly naturalistic; the painting was made during Waterhouse’s brief period of plein-air painting. The setting is not identified, although the Waterhouses frequently visited Somerset and Devon. The model is traditionally said to be the artist’s wife. Waterhouse’s sketchbook contains numerous pencil studies for this and the painting of the same title made six years later (1894, Leeds City Art Gallery). This second work shows the Lady at the moment she looks out of the window and the curse is fulfilled. Waterhouse also made sketches of the final scenes in which the boat bearing the Lady floats into Camelot.

His artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend.

Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser, c’est Churchill (et non Staline)qui renâclait à juger les criminels de guerre. Le Premier ministre britannique pensait qu’il était plus simple de les identifier et de les pendre immédiatement. Mais progressivement, jusqu’à la fin du conflit, l’idée d’un grand procès va prendre corps. Le 13 janvier 1942, des représentants de huit gouvernements, ainsi que le Comité de la France libre, vont signer la déclaration « Saint-James » afin de réclamer que la guerre « ait pour but principal, entre autres, de châtier les coupables de ces crimes contre l’humanité, quel que soit le degré de responsabilité des auteurs ». Le 17 décembre 1942, pour la première fois, une déclaration mentionne le massacre des Juifs. En octobre 1943, les Nations unies créent à Londres une commission des crimes de guerre (à laquelle ne participent pas les Russes). Enfin, le 2 mai 1945, le nouveau président des Etats-Unis, Harry Truman [qui succède à Franklin Roosevelt, mort le 12 avril 1945], farouchement opposé aux exécutions sommaires, charge Robert Jackson, juge à la Cour suprême, de la préparation du procès.

On pense souvent qu’il s’agit d’un symbole, puisque c’est à Nuremberg que furent adoptées les lois antisémites de 1935, et que le parti nazi y organisait aussi chaque année son congrès. Parce qu’il fut le seul à faire son autocritique. L’« architecte » du Reich, devenu à partir de 1942 ministre de l’Armement et de la Production de guerre, a surpris l’auditoire et la presse en assumant ses responsabilités sans se dérober et en condamnant le nazisme. Sa stratégie de défense se résumait ainsi : « Je ne savais rien de tout ça, mais je suis criminel, parce que j’étais dans une organisation criminelle. » Cet homme jeune, élégant et intelligent est parvenu à séduire le tribunal et à bénéficier de larges circonstances atténuantes. Les juges insisteront par exemple sur son opposition à la politique de la terre brûlée d’Hitler, omettant au passage que Speer utilisait la main-d’œuvre juive d’Auschwitz pour faire tourner ses usines d’armement à la fin de la guerre, ou qu’il savait pertinemment ce qu’il se passait dans le camp de concentration de Dora puisqu’il l’avait visité. On n’en avait, certes, pas la preuve à l’époque, ce qui lui a permis de mentir sans aucune honte. Il finira sa vie de manière confortable, rédigeant des livres qui se vendront très bien. The US anthropologist Erika Bourguignon has written about how being raised in an “environment of belief”, in which spirit possession is taken seriously, primes people to enter a dissociative mental state, where normal consciousness is disabled. People then act according to culturally prescribed ideas of how the possessed should behave. This is what happened in European convents before the early 1700s, when nuns would writhe, convulse, foam at the mouth, make obscene gestures and propositions, climb trees and miaow like cats. Their behaviour seemed strange, but the nuns lived in communities that encouraged them to obsess about sin and were steeped in a mystical supernaturalism. Those who became convinced that demons had entered their souls were prone to fall into dissociative states in which they did exactly what theologians and exorcists said the diabolically possessed do. In such cases, the possession trance also spread to witnesses who shared the same theological fears.

The Trump administration announced Wednesday that the United States is moving forward with plans to pull 12,000 US troops out of Germany.

This would relocate about 5,600 troops to Italy and Belgium, with the rest returning to the United States to conduct rotational deployments to Europe, according to the Washington Post. The Pentagon says the plan is intended to strengthen NATO and deter Russia. But Trump — whose explanation has contradicted his own defense officials — says it’s because Germany is taking advantage of the US by not paying enough for its own defense.

Critics say the plan won’t deter Russia; it’ll do the opposite. The countries where the troops are being immediately relocated, Italy and Belgium, aren’t facing serious threats of Russian aggression. Moreover, Trump’s relations with German Chancellor Angela Merkel are already souring, so critics also fear US-German relations could take a further turn for the worse.

And it could cost US taxpayers billions of dollars, according to Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

Shortly after a similar force realignment, when President Barack Obama withdrew some US combat brigades from Germany in 2012 and 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in 2014.

But there will still be 24,000 troops in Germany after the removal (which could take years),

I built a routine. I got up at 7 am, made a pot of coffee, drank my first cup on the porch with a book as the sun rose above the trees. By 9 I got to work. I wrote and researched and revised; I transcribed interviews and took notes. I made lists and mapped out essays. Sometimes I took breaks—to go for a run or a hike, to drive my trash to the dump. I made sugar water for the humming birds, then watched them hover and buzz. Once, I found a secret beach—a secluded strip of sand found only by foot through the forest—and swam in the lake alone.

But every day I wrote. I worked until 6 pm, then sat on the porch with a beer and watched the birds. Each evening at dusk, a doe emerged from the woods. We watched each other, and soon she started bringing a fawn. It was so quiet I could hear them breathe. I had developed asthma in the city, but here the air was clean. I filled my lungs with it. I felt my mind open up, the world slow down. I began to see more clearly what for so long I had been trying to say. I started sleeping well.
