May 8, 1942 - The Battle of the Coral Sea serves as one of the first major naval battles between the U.S. and Japan in which Japanese expansion in the Pacific was halted. Instead, fighting was done via sending aircraft to attack the opposing fleet. While Japan would win this battle in terms of a tactical victory, this served as a strategic victory for helping the U.S. to eventually win the war.
