1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The tone of the poem is fear of going mad and sanity. The words that reveal this is "discerning eye" and "you're straightway dangerous" Yes, it is ironic because it clearly defines anger which you could relate to with the social environment.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

One major theme is madness. Those who are treated as mad are usually seen as crazy or insane. Like when people say that they find they really are the maddest.

2. What heavily connotative words are used? What words have unusual or special meanings? Are any words or phrases repeated? If so, why? Which words do you need to lookup?

In line three, describing that there is much sense in the "starkest Madness" is a paradox. Dickinson refers to the barest form of Madness with much sense. Sense of course means sane and in a way says that the maddest of people are the sanest. The diction in line seven also stands out. Using the word "Demur" only adds so much more meaning. Demur is to question one's thoughts in this case or to be hesitant.

3. What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

In lines two, and eight, there was images used to make the meaning of this poem much more visual for it's readers. In line two, a discerning eye is in reference to an eye that is looking for something different. The image is an eye studying for the odd one out. In line eight, the different person is being handled with a chain. The chain can be associated with being harshly bound in a painful way. Or show how strong the hold has to be.
