Holly Humberstone is a singer-songwriter who produces indie/alternative pop music.

What inspires me the most about her music is her vulnerable and honest lyric writing.

I admire her ability to either vividly paint a scene portraying a familiar experience, or capture a common emotion through a lens that I have not looked at it through before.

One of the techniques she uses to do this is to take a common phrase and use this through which to frame the lyric writing either as a metaphor or a way to draw parallels between the two ideas. A few songs that do this are Deep End, Friendly Fire and Falling Asleep At The Wheel.

I also really love that the production of the songs are often quite simple and paired back sounding which then allows the vulnerability in her voice and lyric writing to really stand out.

She has inspired me to be more vulnerable with my lyric writing and also use the above technique to really try and hone in on what I am trying to communicate as this is something I struggle with, particularly in a chorus.

Billie Eillish is a pop artist who often blurs the boundaries in terms of genre. She is incredibly authentic in the way that she expresses herself which can mean her music can be quite interesting and different.

I love the different ways she uses her voice throughout her songs. Billie will often use a lot harmony stacks ad-libs, background vocals and vocal effects to take the song to different places and give it more layers and interest.

I also really like the production techniques Finneas, her brother, uses. Keeping production quite simple in that there will not be many different instruments/sounds. The sounds he creates are really creative and intentional.

Through her music Billie has encouraged me to not be too worried about what is normal or expected. Break the rules if it feels like the authentic thing to do and think outside the box.
