         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The French Indian Sugar Act <br></strong> Parliament passed the Sugar Act, with the goal of raising 100,000 pounds, an amount equal to one-fifth of the military expenses in North America. ... The Sugar Act lowered the duty on foreign-produced molasses from six pence per gallon to 3 pence per gallon, in attempts to discourage smuggling. <br><strong>Effect<br></strong>Strict enforcement of the Sugar Act successfully reduced smuggling, but it greatly disrupted the economy of the American colonies by increasing the cost of many imported items, and reducing exports to non-British markets.</div>]]></description>

Great Britain hoped that the Intolerable Acts would isolate radicals in Massachusetts and cause American colonists to concede the authority of Parliament over their elected assemblies.<strong><br></strong><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Townsend Acts <br></strong>The Townshend Acts were a series of laws passed by the British government on the American colonies in 1767. They placed new taxes and took away some freedoms from the colonists including the following: New taxes on imports of paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea<strong>.<br>Effect</strong><br>The Townshend Acts would use the revenue raised by the duties to pay the salaries of colonial governors and judges, ensuring the loyalty of America's governmental officials to the British Crown. However, these policies prompted colonists to take action by boycotting British goods.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Boston Tea Party</strong> <br>The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that occurred on December 16, 1773, at Griffin's Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts. American colonists, frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation,” dumped 342 chests of tea, imported by the British East India Company into the harbor.<br><strong>Effect<br></strong>the British shut down Boston Harbor until all of the 340 chests of British East India Company tea were paid for. This was implemented under the 1774 Intolerable Acts and known as the Boston Port Act.<strong><br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>First Continental</strong> <br>On September 5, 1774, delegates from each of the 13 colonies except for Georgia which was fighting a Native American uprising and was dependent on the British for military supplies met in Philadelphia as the First Continental Congress to organize colonial resistance to Parliament's Coercive Acts.<br><strong>Effect<br></strong>In the end, the voices of compromise carried the day. Rather than calling for independence, the First Continental Congress passed and signed the Continental Association in its Declaration and Resolves, which called for a boycott of British goods to take effect in December 1774.<strong><br></strong><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Boston Massacre<br></strong>The Boston Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770 when British soldiers in Boston opened fire on a group of American colonists killing five men. Stamp Act. This was a tax on paper ONLY for when people chose to buy the item. It was imposed on the colonist by the British to help pay for the French and Indian War<strong>.<br>Effect<br></strong>The event in Boston helped to unite the colonies against Britain. What started as a minor fight became a turning point in the beginnings of the American Revolution. The Boston Massacre helped spark the colonists' desire for American independence, while the dead rioters became martyrs for liberty.<strong><br><br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Proclamation<br></strong>The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by the British at the end of the French and Indian War to appease Native Americans by checking the encroachment of European settlers on their lands. In the centuries since the proclamation, it has become one of the cornerstones of Native American law in the United States and Canada<strong>.<br>Effect<br></strong>After Britain won the Seven Years' War and gained land in North America, it issued the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which prohibited American colonists from settling west of Appalachia. The Treaty of Paris, which marked the end of the French and Indian War, granted Britain a great deal of valuable North American land.<strong><br><br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Stamp Act</strong><br>an act of the British Parliament in 1765 that exacted revenue from the American colonies by imposing a stamp duty on newspapers and legal and commercial documents. Colonial opposition led to the act's repeal in 1766 and helped encourage the revolutionary movement against the Crown.<br><strong>Effect<br></strong>The end of the Stamp Act did not end Parliament's conviction that it had the authority to impose taxes on the colonists. The British government coupled the repeal of the Stamp Act with the Declaratory Act, a reaffirmation of its power to pass any laws over the colonists that it saw fit<strong>.</strong></div>]]></description>

The act granted the company the right to ship its tea directly to the colonies without first landing it in England, and to commission agents who would have the sole right to sell tea in the colonies.<br><strong>Effect<br></strong>The Sons of Liberty organized a protest against the Tea Act known as the Boston Tea Party<strong>.</strong></div>]]></description>
