In the TV show fresh of the boat a family from Taiwan moves to american to live the american life. They miss Taiwan a lot and when coming back see all the things that they did not like about there home country and are reminded of why they left. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. They feel out of place in america and Taiwan and I can see how immigrants would feel out of place by coming from one country. They said they were "ghosts" they did not belong to ether. Another element was the brother who staid in country was very successful because he staid and he had connections. Immigrants who came to the country did not have those advantages.

The book Huck Finn was published around the same time that the civil rights movement was starting to die out and Twain tried to bring light to the area of darkness. Twain also used the perspective of a child so well and people were not amended because of this because it was coming out of the voice of Huck not Twain. Twain made Jim a character that people could like and made him a caring father figure. He made it seem as though the entire south was out to get Huck and Jim. This source gives me a reference point of where we have gone forward.

I think through this article we have gone forward. It is used so much less often in todays lauguage and it is considered a curse word. If you say it people look at you as a racist(rightfully so) it is not an ok thing to say. At the time that Huck Finn was written people used it so often and with out any real care of the significance of the word. It just meant African American for them. It was also interesting to hear what people who were not black thought of the word.

White People Should not use the N-Word

People will use derogatory terms for themselves or there race and we as a people should not use those terms against them. It seems fine when you call something white trash or make fun of yourself because your white but you would not want someone saying that same thing back at you. We should respect this by not saying derogatory things such as the n-word. Think if there was a song that had something derogatory to your race in it and you heard someone of another race saying that word out of context then you would be mad at them. This shows that we as Americans have moved forward in the usage of the n-word. We actually think about how using that word could affect the people around us. When Huck Finn was written the n-word was common place.

I think in the case of Asian people we have only gone sideways. We never really think about derogatory terms in reference to Asian people. I personally only hear about people getting in trouble in public areas such as schools and businesses for using the n-word. I don't think i have ever heard of a person getting in trouble or upsetting people for using a derogatory Asian name. I think Americans have had a history of treating Asian immigrant workers poorly and they left there war torn country's to come to the Americas to work and make a better life for there family's.

This Ted Talk showed me what people of color have to deal with. It feels like that we have not made any strides. Its depressing to think that over 100's of years we have not made much progress. In other aspects we have moved forward, like the fact that the n-word is so frowned upon and how we are actually hearing from people who experience these injustices. If a person of color was killed people would not really care but today people do care and we question why is this still happening. Why are we still singling people out for there color and not the kind of person they are. Why do we hate people we don't even know. The answer, I don't have.

In this article there are different pictures from times of segregation to now and we see a lot of the same things. People of color being brought to there knees because they are suspected of doing something wrong. The writer talked about how he was looking in on the racism because he was a white person living in a black community and how when he went to school with both black and white people and some whites told him not to sit with a friend just because he was black. He grew up around people being racist towards though around him so he knows what it is like to live with racism. If people were able see the same way he does then would would have no problems. It makes it seem as though we have gone foreword in some aspect and backwards in others.

The article mostly talks about how the events in Charlottesville are a blatant display of racism and white supremacy. He also asks some very important questions on the future of America. He asks if Americans can give up the idea of a white nation and except multiracial democracy. It is an important question that I think someday we can answer yes too. I don't think we can say that this year or the next or maybe even a few years after. A few certain people who want to feel as though they are better. We have seen a better times in America for race but I think that thinks will get better and we will be able to say together as a national that we are on multiracial nation.
http://eds.b.ebscohost.com.ursus-proxy-10.ursus.maine.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=5&sid=adf94ae6-4191-40f5-bdf3-2c7f72d825ec%40sessionmgr104

This article talks about the sociological impacts of racism on youth. It talks about how racism affects people over time because it makes them feel like they are not ever wanted anywhere and are always feeling threatened. I can understand why people are so affected by racism. I never really understood how racism affected people and made them feel. I think that is why there is so much racial tension in america now-a-days people have been feeling threatened for so long they are feed up with it and are lashing out at anything that seems racist or could be racist because of how it affect people.
http://eds.b.ebscohost.com.ursus-proxy-10.ursus.maine.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=8&sid=1e41484e-77d8-4d41-8e04-a1589b3ff872%40sessionmgr120

This issue has popped up all over the US from Middle School to the NFL people want to change team names that they think are racist. In Wells a native american woman went to a High School football game and thought she was being taunted by people from wells banging on "drums" and doing fake Indian dances. The woman who was offended asked the school for a public apology and wants them to change there school mascot. This sort of thing is happening all over the country in schools and Big leagues. The Washington Red skins have gotten a lot of backlash lately and people have been calling for a name change as well. Scientific experts have published resolutions or policies that state that the use of Native Americans names and/or symbols by non-native sports teams is a harmful form of Ethnic Stereotyping that promotes misunderstanding and prejudice, contributing to other problems faced by Native Americans.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Redskins_name_controversy
http://bangordailynews.com/2017/10/23/sports/high-school-sports/wells-superintendent-defends-district-after-claims-of-racism-at-football-game/
