Encouragement vs enablement

Everyone is actively encouraged to take regular breaks and move more throughout the day. We even have 'team challenges' where you can earn points for completing wellbeing activities throughout the day - motivating for some! - However, for some colleagues the presence of constant back-to-back meetings, or protected 'move time' in diaries being overwritten with meetings, sometimes goes against the principle of being supported to move more.

Proper workstation assessments

I'm convinced my own MSK issues are caused, in part, by simply working at a desk/screen. During a more acute period of this, I requested a workstation assessment as, although I know all the guidance and follow it as best I can, I was still having problems. All that's available is a self-assessment followed by a conversation with an adviser (in which, almost laughably, I was eventually told I was probably just overthinking everything! - not a good 'bedside manner' if you like). Also there is no funding available to equipment beyond monitor, keyboard, mouse, chair and headset, and the team refuses to recommended equipment that enables people to stand for part of their working day. This seems backward to me, though fortunately reimbursement for such equipment can be approved by line managers on a case-by-case basis (and come out of that team's budget). Ultimately, I still do not know whether my setup, posture etc are properly correct, as nobody has physically come to look at me and see whether this is the case. Proper F2F assessments are needed, but not currently available from my employer (Dorset Council).

That some people have needs that go beyond 'health promotion' messages...

It's great that both my employer and my team does a lot of comms around living healthily, encouraging people to take breaks & move more, the individual wellbeing support available, etc. But when you're already 'doing all the right things' as much as possible and still having issues, this can feel quite patronising. It can also feel like there is no support, because the support is only there for people who aren't already taking action. E.g. our team has a lot of MSK issues and gets a team referral to physio support. This is great, but what's offered is some yoga sessions and 'team challenges' to encourage is to move more. Again, this is great, but I already do yoga morning & evening and move a LOT throughout the day, including standing for some of my working day. These offers therefore do nothing for me and it can feel a bit isolating/disempowering that this is seen as the solution...
