The witches were killed do to the fact of they were practicing witchcraft, or some assumed they were, they were burnt not hung since they thought they would survive being hung. They didnt need proof, if they have suspicion of a woman practicing witchcraft or black magic, the woman/witches would be executed. Their goal was to completly banish/wipe out witches or any practice of witchcraft/ black magic from their land. The exacuters would walk around with pickforks and torches hunting down the witches who lingered at night or found them hiding in their homes.

People were tied to boulders if they were accused of being a witch. If they died, they weren't a witch and drowned. If they lived, they were a witch and instead were burned. Basically, if you were accused of being a witch, you were dead nomatter what. -Myla

Furthermore, people were accused of being witches for basically anything. Even if someone only disliked you, they could call you a witch and you'd be killed. -Myla
