1. Role of the god(s): "Still disguised as a beggar..." (Homer1001). Athena disguises Odysseus as a beggar to help him identify who has remained loyal to him during his absence.
2. Plot Point(s): "Telemachus, sat still without a tear...shook his head from side to side..." (Homer 1003). Telemachus is acting as an ally during this episode and remaining calm until the time comes to seek revenge on the suitors.
3. Greek Value(s): "A poor show...bad business, if he happened to be a god. You know they go in foreign guise...to keep an eye on manners..." (Homer 1002) The Greeks respect the power of the god and the role they play. One of the suitors was suggesting Odyessus may be a god in disguise and Antinous should be careful about how he treats him.
4. Characteristic(s): "There is no pain, no burden for the heart when blows come to a man, and he defending his own cattle..." (Homer 1002). Odysseus is a loyal man who will go to great efforts to protect his wife and home.

1. Role of the gods: “Sing in me Muse and through me tell the story of that man…” (Homer 951). At the beginning of the story, Homer, the author, asks the Muse, one of Zeus’s daughters, to help him retell Odysseus’ tale.

2. Hero's Journey Plot Point: “My home is on the peaked sea-mark of Ithaca…” (Homer 953). Odysseys’ ordinary world is Ithaca with his wife Penelope, and his son, Telemachus.

3. Greek Values: “No ship made sail next day until some shipmate had raised a cry, three times, for each poor ghost unfleshed by the Cicones…” (Homer 954). The Greek believed everyone deserved an honorable death and should be paid respect before parting to the next world. Odysseus’ men uphold this value by “raising a cry” as a sign of their grief for their fellow crew members who lost their lives during the Battle of the Cicones.

4. Characteristics: “My men were mutinous fools…” (Homer 953-54). In Sailing from Troy, Odysseus orders his men to return to the ship. Instead of following his orders, they become greedy and rebellious, which results in the Battle of the Cicones and further upsets Zeus.
