The Rising began in 1916 and lasted five days.

It took place in Dublin on Easter Monday.

Seven leaders signed the proclamation including Joseph Plunkett, Eamonn Ceannt, Sean Macdiarmada and James Connolly.

Members of the IRB began to join the GAA, the Gaelic league and Sinn Fein. They hoped that by becoming friends with members of these organisations, they could persuade the members to change from using only peaceful methods to using more violent methods.

Associations that took place in the Rising were the Irish Republican Brotherhood IRB, the Ulster Volunteer force UVF, the Irish citizen army and Cumman Na mBan.

This is the famous proclamation of the Irish Republic.

Eamon de Valera, who participated in the Rising and later became a prominent figure in Irish politics, was born in New York and therefore an American citizen. This fact saved him from being executed with his brothers in arms, though historians disagree on this point.

WB Yeats wrote his famous poem “A Terrible Beauty” after he heard about the rising.

The British authorities only had 400 troops to about 1,000 Irish rebels when the rising began and therefore couldn’t go on the offensive until reinforcements arrived.

By Friday, April 28, 1916, the number of British troops rose to about 19,000 while the Irish Republic groups had only amassed 1,600 fighters due to mass confusion over the date of the Rising.

The British troops were commanded by Brigadier-General William Lowe.

Five interesting facts about the 1916 rising are
1. The Easter Rising made the New York Times news paper eight days in a row.
2. For a number of years the IRB were recieving money from American supporters, in the 1916 they used this money to buy arms in Germany.
3.It is the only proclamation of its era that mentions women equally, beginning “Irishmen and Irishwomen.”
4.The British authorities only had 400 troops to about 1,000 Irish rebels when the rising began and therefore couldn’t go on the offensive until reinforcements arrived.
5.In Dublin, the deadliest battles took place at Mount Street Bridge.
