There is an interesting use of syntax here in which Dewey creates a run-on sentence. I think the sentence was written in this way in order to overwhelm the readers and thus illustrate the many ways thought can be developed in the education system (through a 'free style' manner). The reader may have a greater tendency to agree with Dewey because the way this sentence is structured makes it seem like Dewey's argument is strongly supported. In my personal experience, run on sentences also have an effect on making the speaker look passionate.

Dewey uses rhetorical questions mainly in page 2 which makes the reader reflect on his points and the counterarguments that may be brought up.

Ex: "Is there anything but a problem? Does the question naturally suggest itself within a particular situation or a personal experience?..."
