The degree in which people will strive for confirmation from others is substantially proven in “Only Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros. Growing up as the only daughter in a Mexican-American family, Sandra Cisneros spent most of her time alone. This isolation enabled Cisneros to become a writer motivated by the yearning to get an approval from her father and gain his respect.

I used this image to show how Cisneros felt like an outsider and unwelcome in her own family. Many times her father would exclude her from praises that he bestowed on her brothers. This, in turn, caused her to feel alienated amongst her own family.

Only Daughter highlights on the topics about goals, the relationships we have with our parents, seeking approval and the perspective people have of a woman's role. In the story, Cisneros describes the difficulties that she encountered being raised in a house where men were more important than women. “Only Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros reveals her neglected childhood based on her father's interpretation of a women's role in society.

These images show a visual presentation of how Sandra Cisneros’ father views women in the work field. This displays Sandra Cisneros father’s perspective on men’s superiority over women in work environment.

Throughout the essay, it is clear that Sandra Cisneros does not feel like she belongs in her family as she says “ ….my brothers felt it beneath them to play with a girl in public”(48). Being the only girl in a family with six brothers, Cisneros struggled to connect with her siblings because her brothers were ashamed to play with a girl in public. It is easy to see how Cisneros would feel abandoned since her father’s use of words made her feel like she is being “erased.” Cisneros' father thinks that “destiny [will] lead [Cisneros] to become someone's wife”(48) and nothing more, which furthermore proves why she feels insignificant.

This image demonstrates the feeling of Cisneros in relation to her brothers. She longs to feel included and equal with brother. It also displays the lack of inclusion from her brothers.

Another instance where Sandra is proven to battle with a sense of belonging is when “ my father shakes his head even now and says I wasted all that education”(49). The author's father would praise his sons for being doctors but was disappointed when his daughter Cisneros graduated from college without a husband. Sandra Cisneros father’s judgment and the common stereotype states that her destiny is to become a good “House Wife”. Traditionally in her culture women are suppose to get married and have children but Cisneros goes against tradition and pursues her dream of going to school and becoming a writer. Her father only encouraged Cisneros to go to college for the reason that it would help her fit into his mold of being a “true woman.”

These images demonstrate the idealistic roles of a woman in a household. This meaning that it is the woman's’ sole responsibility to ensure that the household duties and the children are well taken cared of. She is also responsible for teaching her daughters the role women must follow in order to please her husband. The man of the house is therefore identified as the breadwinner of the family and is responsible for the lifestyle proved to his family. However, Cisneros does not abide by the principles set by her father’s beliefs.
