It all started off with a guy waking up in metal box which actually is an elevator going up. The boy can't remember anything other than a few memory flashes which still doesn't really help. Once the elevator reaches the top it opens up to what appears to be in the middle of a field with a bunch of guys standing around it. Eventually we find out his name is Thomas and is then lifted out of the metal box and is taunted by everyone. He realizes that all the boys are different in many ways and that the field is blocked off by four very enormous walls. Thomas is then soon greeted by a kid who seems to be the leader named Alby. He explains that the place he is in is called "The Glade". He sets some ground rules and tells him that he'll explain everything tomorrow on what he calls "The Tour". Thomas on the other hand is very frustrated and confused. Chuck who was the last kid to arrive before Thomas tried to talk to Thomas in hopes that he can help. Thomas only gets more frustrated that he not getting any of the answers he's looking for, so he runs to a cabin where Alby and Chuck are with a very ill boy named Ben. Thomas learns that something called a "Griever" attacked him. He experienced a boy go through "the change" which all new comers should no see their first day. A rule by Alby which makes him very mad. Eventually, Thomas receives dinner by Chuck and explains that people don't know the answer to everything considering how strange the glade actually is. He later sees people running in from each gate at each of the walls. He was surprised that walls that big could even shift. His curiosity was through the roof because he wanted to know what those "runners" were doing. Thomas then has another run in with Gally who basically threatens him again. Thomas is soon determined to become a runner. Next morning Newt wakes up Thomas before the rest of the boys wake up to show him something, He shows Thomas a griever which happens to be a machine and animal like thing with multiple limbs of destruction. Meant and designed to kill. Newt tells Thomas that they only come out at night. Thomas still wants to be a runner. He's then given "The Tour" by Alby. Some basics are explained like a new kid arrives every month and there's no way of knowing how the elevator works or where it goes. The maze's walls shift and change at night. Later that day a siren goes off which indicates the elevator. Everyone is confused because it only comes up once a month with supplies and a kid. They all rush to see whats in the box and what happened next shocked them all. Its the very first girl. In her hand was a crumbled up piece of paper that said "She's the last one ever".

James Dashner's Writing Style

Style of Writing
The Maze Runner is written in a third person limited omniscient point of view. He tells the story through the main character named Thomas. The reader understands and goes through all of his fears, motivations, and emotions throughout the book. Including all the physical and mental challenges he faces throughout the story. Keeping the reader on edge the whole time because the urge to know what Thomas does next is exhilarating, Lots of chapters but super short. Most texts and paragraphs are straightforward and to the point. Typically doesn't become that confusing and is usually easy to follow. This book was meant for teens so word choices and sentence structure isn't all that complicated. The story itself was definitely the main focus. Which is why this books attracts so many young readers. Includes real life problems like for Chuck in the beginning it seemed like all he wanted were friends considering that he was still pretty new. For anyone going to a new school, city, country or whatever. A set of friends is definitely needed.

The new girl is soon taken to a near by hut and Alby orders that if anyone touches her will be banished. Alby hosts a meeting ("Gathering of the Keepers") and Thomas and Chuck raid the kitchen for food. Thomas learns that the runners spend all day in the maze and when they come back, they'll meet in the center hut to discuss what they have seen. Thomas starts to have flashbacks of the word "Wicked". Thomas soon stubbles upon a huge grave in the forest. Thomas hears footsteps and twigs snapping then out of no where a Ben the super diseased kid attacks and bites Thomas on the shoulder. Thomas can't escape. As Ben goes in for another strike Alby appears with a bow and arrow killing him instantly saving Thomas. Although before Ben dies he tells Alby that killing Thomas is for the best. Wonder why he would even say that. The next morning Thomas is told that the new girl is still in a coma and he goes through basic animal training. Later he sees a runner come back and urgently wants to speak with him but the very next second the runner collapses. Not much happens other than the the runner whose name is Minho asks for water and tells Thomas and Alby some big new. He saw a dead griever. Alby continues to accuse Thomas of knowing thing and not sharing his information, but Thomas defends himself saying that he remembers nothing. Ben is found still alive and so at the next meeting Alby and his keepers agree to banish Ben. Which basically means sending Ben into the Maze at night which is the most dangerous time right before the doors close. He pleads for his life but sent off for the attempted murder on Thomas. Thomas the next morning is awaken by Newt for more training. Newt then tells Thomas a few more things about being a runner that can withstand stress and have physical endurance and that they must be able to keep a map of the maze in their head at all times. Later that day Minho and Alby prepare the journey into the maze to see the dead Griever. The new girl is still in a coma and continues to mumble things. People start to get worries because Minho and Alby should have returned hours ago but haven't. At the end of the day while all the other runners have returned Alby and Minho have still not. The boys start to presume that both of them might be dead. As the doors start to close they see Minho is carrying Alby saying that they were attacked my grievers. Thomas knowing that both of them won't make it through in time he runs into the maze right before it closes.

The character in this book that I find interesting is Thomas who is the main one. He's definitely a round character but also a flat one at the same time. These new life experiences is changing the way he thinks but his actions and motives remain the same and till wants more answers. As of now he's only been a follower having to accept all these new rules. The situation he's in now with Alby and Minho will most likely play out with him calling all the shots turning him into one of the leaders. He's a very brave and curious character that will o anything to find out exactly what is really going on and where they truly are. Especially finding his memories. Now that he’s a runner he could really be the key on finding a way out of the Glade.

Minho is pretty mad at Thomas for breaking the number one rule which is to never enter that maze. Alby was stung by the so called dead griever which seemed to only be playing dead. Minho and Thomas learn that although they know grievers always come out at night doesn’t mean they won’t during the day. Thomas spits out a bunch of ideas to survive but Minho tells him that nothing will work. He explains that they have to split up to increase the chance of survival. So they leave Alby by the door and go. Thomas is angry at Minho for leaving him behind. Thomas starts to make a game plan and first was to find a spot to hide Alby. After a few minutes of deciding on what to do. He decides to hoist Alby up along a wall covered in vines. Thomas creates a pulley system to raise Alby up to about thirty feet or so and leaves him there. Then a griever approaches. From what was written a griever is part animal and machine with hairs covered in some kind of slime. At first being confused on how to reach Alby and Thomas who are over thirty feet above the ground. The griever starts to climb the wall. Thomas starts to taunt it all n hopes it’ll ignore Alby. It works which is good but the problem now is that Thomas has a griever chasing him. Thomas who’s running for his life takes a corner to only encounter three more grievers. He’s basically trapped. Having no choice whatsoever Thomas decides to turn around and go head on with the griever that was initially pursuing him. Thomas then puts in the moves and jukes the griever out. As Thomas continues to run for his life he runs into Minho. They startle each other than continue to run with each other. Minho than leads Thomas and the rest of the grievers to an edge of a wall. Grievers charging at full speed. Thomas and Minho avoid the grievers which all four than falls of the edge to their deaths. Both of them a tired and exhausted but mostly thankful that they survived the night in the maze. Thomas then remembers that Alby is still dangling in the wall, so both of them rush towards Alby to get him down. They rush Alby to the door to dose him with a serum hopefully saving his life. All the boys were waiting at the door and once they saw all three of them alive shocked all of them. No one has ever survived a night in the Maze. Alby is rushed to the medical hut and Thomas and Minho go to rest. Chuck wakes up Thomas with great news. Alby is going to be okay, but he is still going through some kind of “ changing “ which is what Ben went through. Thomas can’t help but feel worried that Alby will be change. Meet soon informs that Alby will be completely fine and that there will be a gathering tomorrow to talk about what they’ll do with Thomas because of all the rules he’s broken. At the meeting Thomas is seated in the middle with eleven other boys and he’s not allowed to speak until the end. Every boy says something different because although he broke the number one rule he also saved Minho and Alby. So everyone doesn’t really know what to do until Minho suggest to make him the Keeper if the Runners. The only Gally wants his to punish him in every way possible. Everyone thinks Minho is crazy for even considering that but he continues to defend himself at the same time insulting Gally for being a coward. Gally threatens everyone and so Minho tackles him to the ground. At the end Newt decides that he’ll spend one night in the slammer then the following morning he’ll start off as a runner. Alby woke up and has been asking for Thomas the whole time. Thomas and Newt go to Alby to talk. Alby who remembers a lot because of the serum explains who Thomas is and the girl including something called “The Flare”. Out of no where Alby starts to choke himself. He says he wasn’t doing it on purpose but felt like something was controlling him. Before Alby passes out he tells Thomas and Newt to be careful of the girl and to protect that maps.

Newt and Thomas agree to throw Gally into the slammer for threatening Thomas. Thomas also has to spend a night there but gets to train the next morning. Later on they decide to go see the girl and stare at her in hopes that it’ll trigger a memory. As Thomas is staring at her he can feel that he knows her somehow. Out of nowhere he remembers her name which is Teresa. Gally surprisingly ran into the maze with no trace of being found. Later on Thomas is escorted to the slammer for the day. Chuck being the great friend that he is brings lunch to Thomas while he’s locked up. Alby is the one to release Thomas at the end of the day and explains how he remembers Thomas helping the creators. Next morning Minho wakes up Thomas before dawn he suppliers him with new gear like shoes and a backpack full of more supplies. Apparently Minho can request for new supplies from the creators by slipping in a note into the Box. He even gave him weapons including several sharp knives. Minho explains how there is eight sections of the Maxe with the Glade in the center of it all. Each runners job is to memorize and map their given section everyday because the sales shift every night. They found some kind of pattern on a monthly basis but nothing that looks like an exit. Since this is the first time for Thomas his job is to only follow and shadow Minho. Minho and Thomas travel through sections one and eight. Minho is smart enough to leave cutter ivy on the ground like some way of bread crumbs. Thomas comes up with the idea that if anyone had tried to follow a griever and see where they come from. Of corse Minho says no most likely because they aren’t very fond of being killed. Later that day Minho and Thomas take a break and have lunch eventually leading to a nice nap. When Thomas wakes up and quickly realizes that the sky is a bit gray and just about every other boy is freaking out. They quickly realize that this whole place is just fake. Thomas and Minho still decide to go into the maze as they walk up they see a “ dead “ griever. Quick look away it was gone. They quickly chased it to the edge of a clif. They found it hard to believe that the grievers don’t just commit suicide by jumbling off so they throw a coin to see how far the drop is. One rock seemed to have lockstep a black square in jumping range for them to check out. Thomas tries to convince Minho to stay over night and see if it’s an exit but Minho disagrees and says not now. When the return to the Glade, Minho shows Thomas how to draw a map of the walks he’s ran and memorized. Alby and Newt show up with some news; the girl is awake.

A main theme that I’ve found is mostly to not give up. All this chaos has leaked in the Glade first with a girl showing up for the first time. Alby getting stung by a Griever in broad daylight. Now including the sun disappearing. With all these problems adding up the boys haven’t given up on finishing a real way out. Mostly Thomas, Minho, Alby, Newt, and Chuck are the ones that are not going to go down so easily. A similar theme that I’ve found was in the Hunger Games. In all the books and movies. When everything seemed to be helpless they still never gave up and in the end ultimately succeeded

Alby is found out cold and Thomas believes its time to look at the sections again for some kind of escape. The maps were supposedly burned but were saved in the weapons room. Thomas and teresa come up with a plan to look at each section day by day, trace it on wax paper, and overlay them. Minho, Newt, Teresa, and Thomas examine it and find a vague " F " in the overplayed papers. Teresa and Newt are left to find more letters creating the words float and catch. Minho and Thomas prepare the runners for their overnight stay in the Maze. Teresa and Thomas are telepathic, so while Thomas is in the Maze she tells him that they've found more words. When night rolls around the runners experience something really weird. For the longest time no grievers were to be seen. Eventually the see one and another runs passed, but they didn't harm any of the runners. They leave the Maze heading back to the Glade feeling a bit disturbed. Thomas soon talks to Teresa about the other words which are bleed, death, stiff, and push. Thomas avoids everyone for the rest of the day and learns that a kid named Dave was taken by a griever when he was in the Maze. He goes out into the Maze to save him. In doing so he gets stung multiple times, but he manages to escape and runs back in time for the other boys to grab him and invest the griever serum. Thomas is in the beginning of the change which is nothing but pure pain. Thomas wakes back up with new memories telling them to get a gathering started. Thomas doesn't want to say anything till then, but he does say that the Creators made the Maze for them to escape like some kind of test. Thomas explains that all the boys were taken by the creators at a young age and their names are based on famous scientist. Creators have been watching them through those beetle found all across the glade and maze. The creators need survivors for something really important. Thomas also tells them that he was one of them. He admits that him and Teresa was apart of the Creators against their will. Their telepathic powers is somehow very important. Thomas then goes to explain that there is a computer station that they have to punch in a code which will supposedly open a gate and deactivate the grievers. The reason why they were never able to find the computer is because its located in the grievers hole. To know how this story end; read the book.

Based on the Fry Readability Graph this book ranges from about a 9th grade and above. All in all the reading level didn't surprise me as much. Quite straightforward and simple. The age level for this book is anywhere from 13 and up. It was mostly made for teens. The language and major plot points are enough for even a young audience to find amusing.

In my opinion this novel was definitely interesting. It was much different from reading about stories taken place in the read world. The amount of details, suspense, and plot twist had a way of hooking readers from the beginning. Finishing the novel was a major cliff hanger. It just makes you think what is next. Its a good thing theres two more books that continue the story. Which means that the story only gets better. I'd definitely recommend this book to others. Mostly over the movie which was very well made, but the book contains more of a story worth reading and checking out. I would say this was a very good read i enjoyed every page of it. The plot was well written and very different from anything else.
