How: I create designs predominantly through photography and photo-manipulation, video graphic aspects, and mixed media imagery.

What: My typical style is a bit alternative, abstract and grungy. I like to take inspiration from ordinary things and recreate them in a disorderly or unusual fashion. For example, I might take inspiration from a natural landscape and manipulate the colours to pinks and purples and alter the shapes of objects to create something entirely different and out of this world. I like to appreciate the world around me, but also manipulate it in my artworks to give them more personal meaning.

For Whom: I love to create designs for new small businesses. I love helping others bring their ideas to life and finding creative ways to represent their identity.

This analogous palette features a mix of cool and vibrant colours. The target audience for my business is upcoming small businesses. The pale pink is a playful colour that represents youthfulness. The vibrant pink represents excitement and energy. Purple represents transformation and is associated with royalty. Blue represents calmness and stability. The purpose of this colour combination is to communicate my ability to create captivating professional designs to help upcoming small businesses owners. The calm qualities of this colour wheel convey the idea of smooth process.

Personal meaning/connection to the given colours:
I have been working with the same sort of colour palette for most of my previous personal designs as the colours pink, purple and blue hold personal meaning. Pink typically represents femininity, whilst blue represents masculinity. Purple is a combination of both. I like to think that if I were to express my personality in colours, I would use these three to describe it. Whilst I identify as female, I have always felt as equally masculine as I am feminine. Therefore the key colour that I would use to describe myself with would be purple. On some days I feel more feminine ( 'pink'), on others a feel more masculine ('blue'). I also identify as bisexual. This colour combination makes up the bisexual pride flag. The bisexual flag was designed by Michael Page in 1998. The pink stripe at the top represents same gender-attraction, the blue stripe at the bottom represents opposite-gender attraction and the purple stripe in the centre represents attraction to both.

To me this colour scheme also represents the ability to be diverse. I played around with different brush tools to create the textures look that I wanted for this drawing.

I translated the other two drawings into Illustrator. I found that when I image-traced the images, they looked very detailed and busy. I decided to draw over my sketches and create more space within them, making them look more simplified and fun. This would also allow the images to be more scalable.

I also added colour to my drawings to suit the rest of my portfolio and make the drawings more bright and fun. Through this activity I learnt how to navigate in Adobe Illustrator and Fresco and I experimented with a range of tools to create my designs. ]]> 2021-09-27 05:50:17 UTC https://padlet.com/briannaduell1/sj3qa1ibhjj9gt8p/wish/1770139819 Self map justification briannaduell1 https://padlet.com/briannaduell1/sj3qa1ibhjj9gt8p/wish/1770142461 For the self-mapping activity, I wanted to communicate the target audience for my brand, new small businesses and demonstrate my skills with a diverse range of mediums as well as incorporating my own favourite styles.

The theme of Spring in this artwork is used to symbolise my focus on new small businesses, as it symbolises new beginnings and rebirth. The pressed flowers and butterflies used not only allude to the Spring season, but also express freedom and growth.

The maps incorporated into this artwork reflect my personal connection to place. I was born and have always lived in Brisbane, Australia, which has formed my cultural understanding. I also have Irish heritage and English heritage which also strongly informs my designs.

I have painted over the maps following graphs by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology that show the 'chance of exceeding the median rainfall for September to November 2021' (the months of Spring in Australia), tying them into the key theme of the work.

The figure on the right of the image is an abstract self painting replicating a body heat map. The colours used adhere with my chosen design colour palette. The film that wraps around the figures' body symbolises my love of photography.

The use of maps of place and the body heat map within this self-map symbolise my goal to delve deeper and communicate clients/businesses' values and beliefs in my designs, not just the aesthetics.

A range of mediums have been used to create this artwork including acrylic paint, paper, dried flowers (secured with hot glue), feather butterflies, cut up film and pen ink, to communicate my skills in a variety of mediums and styles.

Overall, this self-map communicates the influence of my connection to nature and place in my designs. It demonstrates my creativity and ability to work with a variety of mediums and shows my focus on working with people to communicate deeper meaning.

I have a strong appreciation for tattoo artists and I have been commissioned to design tattoos as part of my own work. I love the complexity of this design by Tweakt and Nusi Quero.
