Rockefeller was born on July 8th, 1839 in New York to a traveling salesman, who he didn't see much, and a middle class family. He married Laura Spelman, a teacher and daughter of an active abolitionist, in 1864. The pair would have four daughters and one son. Although wishing to reach the age of 100, Rockefeller died at the age of 97 in Florida, one of his many homes. He currently lies at the Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1870, he helped form and establish Standard Oil, which almost a decade later, would control over 90 percent of the United States' refineries and pipelines. Although Rockefeller was very wealthy and famous, many people did not praise him; he was accused of poorly treating his workers, predatory pricing (make prices so low that competitors could not complete,) and conspiring with railroads to get rid of his competitors. In 1911, the Supreme Court found Standard Oil in violation of anti-trust laws and Standard Oil was dissolved and disbanded.

To most people today, Rockefeller is known as the richest man to ever live, and while that is true, he didn't keep all his money. Over his lifetime, he donated over 500 million dollars to many different causes; some of these included: education, religion, and science. He funded for the University of Chicago and Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research or Rockefeller University to be established.

The Oil Industry

The oil industry, which Rockefeller practically was the "father" of it, was thriving in the 19th century. Since the iron and steel companies were booming, the railroads couldn't be anything without the same "boom" of oil, and Standard Oil (co-founded by Rockefeller) did that! From then on out, oil would become one of America's biggest fuels and would become a very important part of the American economy.
