This is assessment made by Aaron Landau reflects upon the rise of skepticism in Elizabethan England. The ghost serves as the element that institutes the confusion. The fact that Horatio could not communicate with the ghost and the in-conclusiveness of Bernardo's "Christian Narrative" also adds to the confusion. When confronted with the Ghost's story of murder Hamlet, filled with a blind rage, plans to kill his uncle following the ghosts every word. This is shown in the passage below. The reader, free from emotional investment is left somewhat skeptical about whether things could really be so strait forward. Hamlet's blind lack of skeptisism eventually leads to his death and implied damnation as a murderer.

The Ghost is a manifestation of slander and rumor. Hamlet already harbored a deep hatred of his Uncle Claudius. The slander presented by the Ghost provided a justification in Hamlet’s mind for him to take violent action. In Act I Scene I, the far-reaching effects of slander are seen through the actions of Barnardo and Marcellus. Barnardo and Marcellus’s fear causes them to spread information about the Ghost to Horatio, who then relays the information to Hamlet. This shows how uncertain information  can spread rapidly among a community. When the Ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius killed his father in Act I Scene V, Hamlet believes the Ghost right away because he wants to believe it.
