Bush issued an executive order banning federal funding for new sources of stem cells developed from preimplantation human embryos. The action stalled research and discouraged scientists" (Ravven, 2017, pg.1). George W. Bush opposed the idea of stem cell research, therefore he made it illegal to use federal funds to support this research. Neither nation experienced drops in mass shootings or other gun related-crime that could be attributed to their buybacks and bans."

Oatman, M. (2017, May/Jun). The gust belt. Mother jones, pp. 70-71.

Wind energy has been a debatable source of alternative energy for many recent years. Now, after years of experimenting and outlook, this is a promising debate for the better. According to Maddie Oatman of Mother Jones newspaper (2017), many Midwestern states including Iowa have converted many areas to wind power and it has proved to be a wonderful installment for the economy. “In Iowa, landowners reap at least $10 million a year leasing their land to turbines. Nationwide, they may earn as much as $900 million a year by 2030, according to analyst Alex Morgan of Bloomberg New Energy Finance” (Oatman, M., 2017,p.71). This data proves that for farmers providing land for the turbines, the compensation to make up for the lost farmland goes above and beyond what they would normally make per year for their crops. With this knowledge it’s clear to see that wind energy from turbines is not only great for the economy, but also for the individual farmer that the turbine effects.

Common Core standards negatively impacted the lives of disabled and disadvantaged students by leaving them behind. Students who are slower learners or who are disabled do not receive the help they need to be successful in their education. So, the No Child Left Behind Act has failed its main purpose: making sure no child is left behind, providing the same learning opportunities for everyone. According to Diane Racich’s article, The Common Core Costs Billions and Hurts Students, “Even in states with strong common standards and tests, racial achievement gaps persist” (2016). This quote portrays the fact that students of a certain race are also being left behind, and the fact that achievement gaps are still in existence. Obviously, Common Core standards are not benefiting schools because it prohibits certain students from obtaining an education and receiving the same opportunities as other students.

Many factors contribute to body image and our own version of beauty, our friends, family, and in this century, social media. Behind the screen, people are made beautiful through computer programs, faking looks and causing people to become more aware of their own imperfections. According to Beverley Ballaro's article titled Body Image & The Media: An Overview, written in 2017, "Since the late 1990s, however, a growing number of parents, medical authorities, and cultural critics have expressed concerns about the relentless marketing of idealized body images and the toll such marketing takes on the physical and mental health of Americans"(Ballaro, 2016). Stating statistics proven by cultural critics, it is clearly proven that the media portrays unrealistic body images, affecting women and men alike.

Although all people are in need of mental health awareness, the LGBT community may be in more urgent need than any other group. In accordance with the Advocate, Mike King explains, "Experts on youth suicide are accustomed to hearing that gay youth are at three times greater risk of attempted suicide than their straight counterparts; by contrast, the Canadian survey found that gay and bisexual young men are 13.9 times more at risk for attempted suicide...'The younger you come out. the more likely you are to attempt suicide because you don't have the coping skills,' " (King, 1996). Here, King stresses that suicide rates among gay or bisexual young men are about 4.5 times higher than previously believed in comparison with straight young men, and this horrifying statistic grows even larger among young men who are openly gay at younger ages. Consequently, support groups or individualized attention for LGBT youth would prove to be quite beneficial.

The vast majority of Americans see Artificial Intelligence as an immense power that is here to take jobs away from the people. However, moat of the population embraces the benefits Artificial Intelligence brings to our way of life. Sadly, it is true that A.I. has been a contributor to a decrease in employment, but it also opens up new and exciting job opportunities. According to New York Times editor Niraj Chokshi, "And despite the expected decline in employment, the public widely embraces artificial intelligence in attitude and in practice. About five in six Americans already use a product or service that features it, according to a survey that was conducted last fall and from which new findings were released on Tuesday" (2018, pg. 6). This quote means that roughly 83% of all Americans use Artificial Intelligence in their lives and in their careers. Without Artificial Intelligence, taxi drivers and Uber drivers would not be able to use a navigation system to get where their customers want to be. Librarians would not be able to access the millions of important records of information online. And the U.S. Army would not have as many job opportunities, like navigation or communication, without the power of A.I. Thus, many people fear that robots will eventually take over their own job one day, but the real fact is that Artificial Intelligence is helping create millions of jobs all throughout the world.

A major point for supporters or school uniforms is that it puts everyone on a level economic playing field, but this simply is not the case. According to USA today news, a lawsuit occurred over school uniforms claiming “...uniform requirement violates their children's constitutional right of free expression and that it violates the guarantee of a free public education. The Bells would have to pay $641 for five sets of pants and shirts required by the policy, Laura Bell says” (Motsinger, 2007). This means an extra $641 dollars on top of other various school fees just to have clean clothes for the week. Assuming a student doesn’t wear their uniform absolutely everywhere they go, they still need to buy at least some clothes to wear for other occasions, and still face the hardships they would with no uniforms. That is an awful lot of money in total when a “level economic playing field” is suppose to be made by uniforms.

When parents are asked about what kind of teacher they want their kid to be taught by, oftentimes they say something similar to, “I want a teacher who can help my son/daughter to learn and grow in school.” When high school and college students are asked this question, with the exception that it’s usually referring to their teachers instead of their kids teachers, they will usually say something close to what the parents said. It’s not hard to believe that they both want the same thing from the teachers, but what is hard to digest is that sometimes they’re disappointed. Institute director of education Dr. Ben Jensen said, “educators' effectiveness could be improved by up to 30 percent if schools used... methods found to be most successful in assessing teachers' performance. These methods include:… peer observation; direct observation of classroom teaching and learning; student and parent surveys and self-assessment” (Lucy, 2011) A 30% increase is huge when you’re talking about how well a teacher is educating a pupil. This clearly shows that students inclusion in the process of grading their teachers (through surveys) is helping to show bad teachers that they have to change something they do in order for them to be a good educator.
