1). In this passage, Gatsby is very nervous to meet Daisy again. He is described as "pale as death" with "trembling fingers" when meeting her and his silent communication with Nick about how uncomfortable he is is conveyed through his "distraught eyes" that "[glance] momentarily" at Nick whenever there is an awkward pause.

2) Daisy is the subject of Gatsby's nervousness, and she reacts stiffly and artificially when faced with his mannerisms. When he talks to her, she answers with a "clear artificial note" and sits "frightened but graceful" on the edge of a chair. She is taken aback by Gatsby's stiffness, autonomy and strange actions, but is still trying her best to act proper and classy. This is not, however, how Gatsby wants her to react. Gatsby wants her to like him and enjoy his company, but he makes this complex because of his lack of confidence.

3)
a. "Under the dripping bare lilac-trees a large open car was coming up the drive. It stopped".

b. "the exhilarating ripple of her voice was a wild tonic in the rain" metaphor

c. The clock in this passage represents the inability to control time. It shows Gatsby's longing for the past, and that he has no control over when or if that may occur again.

4) The main theme of this passage was memory and past and artifice vs reality. Gatsby is living in the past and hoping to recreate it in the present, however, this is becoming increasingly less likely as he continues his efforts to woo Daisy. His memories of her are biased and over-exaggerated, and he is caught up in the longing for her over what is real and not, or what is achievable and what is not.

1) In this passage, Gatsby is identifiably nervous, as portrayed through his mannerisms. He shows his desperation towards wanting Nick to invite Daisy over for tea, frantically offering him "a plunge in the swimming pool" or "go to Coney Island". Gatsby's house was thought to have been "on fire" by Nick, demonstrating Gatsby's desire to fill his heart and retain his relationship with Daisy. He feels empty so to cope, showers himself with material possessions, hoping Daisy would also gravitate towards them.
2) In this passage, Gatsby was quick and snappy, an identification of his nervousness. Nick responds but is mildly overwhelmed by the offerings being provided to him. In desperation Gatsby tries his hardest to make him happy, and comply with his desire to see Daisy again. Nick agrees, but shows offence when Gatsby offers him money.
3)
Varying sentence length:
"At first I thought it was another party..."
"But there wasn't a sound" Pg 79

Metaphor/simile:
"Your place looks like the World's Fair" Pg 79

Descriptive adjectives/verbs:
"He turned his eyes toward it absently" Pg 79
"Looking at me with supressed eagerness" Pg 79

Symbolism:
House on "fire" - All the lights are on to look "grand", which is representative of Gatsby's desire to fill his heart by purchasing material goods.

4) The main theme of this passage is "Hollowness of wealth and the upper class". Gatsby is shown to have coped with his empty heart by showering himself in wealth. His acquired assets are also used to persuade Nick into inviting Daisy. After finding out Nick doesn't earn a large sum of money it "seemed to reassure him", providing further confidence to use his wealth to offer Nick more money.

Gatsby acts as a nervous wreck after he gets Nick to ask Daisy to come over for tea. This is so he finally will be able to meet her after “5 years”. Gatsby stands in the pouring rain “pale as death” rethinking if he really should meet Daisy again after all these years. Without rethinking his decisions he walks into the house but as he does so he is a different person. Fitzgerald makes Gatsby seem awkward but rude as he stands in a “stranger counterfeit of perfect ease” acting like he is bored. Gatsby acts this way because deep down he does truly love Daisy but does not know how to act around her as she is married but he also abandoned her without even thinking of leaving her Tom who is abusive and controlling.

2. At first Daisy is confused seeing that Nick never has invited her over before and asking to be alone she is even more curious. Because of this confusing manner she does ask Nick “are you in love with me?'' without answering her, Nick acts more suspicious, jumping straight into asking for her chauffeur to go away. This makes Nick seem uneasy. As soon as Daisy connects eye contact with Gatsby within the room the tension in the air builds. Daisy doesn't act surprised but “awfully glad” that Gatsby is here with her. Noticing Gatsby’s silence Daisy stands out, her facial expressions and body posture almost seeming like she is “frightened”. After a long silence Daisy states matter of fact “[her and Gatsby] haven’t met for many years” this is surprising as Daisy is usually shy and doesn’t speak her way. This isn’t how Gatsby thought she would act and to his surprise he comes back at her with exact time on how long they have spent apart.

3. Varying sentence length:

“I went out and opened it.”

“Gatsby, pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets, was standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes.”

Metaphor/simile:

“Pale as death”

“streak of hair lay like a dash of blue paint”

“Turned sharply as if he was on a wire”

Descriptive adjectives/verbs: Glistening, scrutinised, harrowed, overwhelming, sharply, trembling

Symbolism: The old clock as it resembles the time apart Daisy and Gatsby have spent.

1) In this passage, Gatsby is avid to show Daisy around his house. He attempts to impress Daisy "instead of taking the short cut" in hopes of her constant upper class upbringing formulating an interest in him due to his material possessions. It is clear that Gatsby is enchanted by Daisy as he "hadn't once ceased looking at [her]" and his bewitched mannerism as Fitzgerald describes the found new purpose in the objects in his house "according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes". Nicks ghostly acknowledgement of "guests concealed" further support Gatsby's longing quest of introduction to Daisy and the parallel that it provides now it is achieved.

2) Nick's strong judgement of character helps us envision Gatsby's eagerness to impress Daisy, not only when Gatsby "took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them". His clear display of 'pure' wealth described as "sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel" corresponding with the earlier description of Daisy as 'pure' as she is dressed "in white". It is obvious that in this passage Gatsby is attempting to show that he is worth Daisy and that he aligns with who she is.

3)
Metaphor/simile:
"he was running down like an over-wound clock" pg 89
"piled like bricks"

Descriptive adjectives/verbs:
"ghostly laughter", "owl-eyed man", "pale gold odour of kiss-me-at-the-gate", "consumed with wonder", "well-loved eyes", "in a dazed way", "unreasoning joy", "inconceivable pitch of intensity",
Symbolism:
"I felt that there were guests concealed behind every couch and table" pg 88
A comparison of how far Gatsby has come from curating the most advanced of parties in hopes of Daisy hearing about it to now having her in the very same house.

4) The main theme of this passage is "hollowness of wealth and the upper class" as Gatsby is boasting his wealth to guide his way into Daisy's born and bred upper class heart as it is all she knows. As he "revalued everything in his house" that drew Daisy's attention. Nick's corresponding memory of "the owl-eyed man" breaking "into ghostly laughter" as they enter the library that Nick and Jordan had met the man who had informed them of how the books that would prove Gatsby an important an educated man was in fact "didn't cut the pages" and is just a part of the facade.

1. During this passage we can see Gatsby being quite frantic and nervous while he's waiting for Daisy where he barely responds to whatever Nicks says, including when Nick tried bring up the grass and Gatsby clearly did not care. "'What grass?' he inquired blankly. 'Oh, the grass in the yard.' He looked out the window at it, but, judging from his expression, I don't believe he saw a thing.", showing that Gatsby was too nervous to indulge in little chatter with Nick.
2. Even though Daisy is the thing that Gatsby is most nervous to meet, in this passage specifically it is mostly Nick and Gatsby trying to make sure that everything is perfect just before Daisy arrives. Nick goes through large efforts to decorate the place as well as making sure that Gatsby actually follows through with the commitment of having the tea with Daisy.
3. Metaphor/ simile
"The rain cooled about half-past three to a damp mist, through which occasional thin drops like dew."
4. I believe the main theme in this passage would be love and marriage and unhappy relationships, with Gatsby trying his hardest to spark up the old feelings with Daisy and him the lengths that Gatsby goes to to try and make the evening as perfect as possible shows how much he wants things to work with him and daisy. As well as unhappy relationships as when Nick and Daisy talked on the phone Nick mentioned to not bring Tom along with her, without second guessing Nick she is more than willing to do this, showing that their relationship isn't very loyal or trusting and overall a pretty unhappy relationship.
