Story behind Self portraits

The idea of creating self portraits came from words of affirmation. When children passed by a mirror, they were to tell themselves something nice.

While the students are making their self portrait, something I will do to expand thier thinking is ask open ended questions like..

4)What do you teel makes you unique?

As the activity comes to an end I will have the students share their portrait with the class and describe it.

I will also have a discussiom circle summarizing the activity and answering any questions the students might still have.

I will begin this activity by discussing words of affirmation.

Then I'd give the kids each a mirror and let them admire themselves.

From there. I'd tell them to compliment themselves and

the person next to them.

I'd follow that up with reading "Who I Am" by Susan Verde and Video "How to Make a Self Portrait | Miss Brushes Art Academy (Sesame Studios)"

Then, the activity would begin.

Expanding activity

If this is an activity we want to expand, some things we can do are...

✩Organize an art gallery for parents to come and see.

✩attempt to draw/create another classmates portrait.

✩Have a white elephant with children and whoever they get they write a card to a classmate to share their appreciation.
