2.What does it means to be a "global citizen"?

A global citizen is not necesseraily someone who has experienced visiting other cultures/countries, but someone who is aware of what things are important to different groups of people. Being aware of these and then implementing mutual respect for all cultures, whether these be neighbouring countries, distant countries or even cultures within the same country, is what makes somebody a global citizen.

3.How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

In the schools I have worked in, in the UK, there is a format whereby issues surrounding citizenship are taught during the timetable, often by qualified specialists, or delivered (often by non-specialists) by form tutors during morning or afternoon registration. In my experience, it can be very difficult to motivate students during this time due to it not being formally examined and therefore seen as little use of their time. There is time set aside though, and I feel that if all those responsible for delivering the programme buy into it, it will help make students take it more seriously. Biology provides many opportunities for this, particularly in food security, medical health programmes and issues faced by those countries considered to be LEDCs, and public health issues such as diet, smoking and drugs.

4.What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?

I teach many students from different backgrounds. We have weekly sesisons where we share experiences about childhood, travelling and family history. Some students who have been together for nearly 5 years don't know each other beyond a superficila level. I enjoy it when Y11 students find out about each other's family history and where people are from (seeing they've been together for nearly 5 years!) and never really spoke about it. Studying how different cultures preare for food shortages in the future is interesting and how global population size is providing one of the biggest threats to our species.

5.How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

Not seeing beyond our own life exeriences leads to prejudice and afear of the unknown. Examples of where cultures have clashed in the past and the reaosns for this, particularly leading up to any conflict and how this could have been avoided is key. World wars, the Vietnam war and the Gulf wars are recent enough to be able to discuss why groups of people disagree and what barriers exist to finding peaceful resolutions to diasgrreements. In Biology, ideas surrounding food security and potential issues involving medical health care programmes are ways of investigating how governments work together, and where they haven't worked together often results in a bad result.

With two Sixth Form classes, I made students carry out a research project on the differences to approach of vaccination programmes between India, East African countries, Russia and the UK. They had to evaluate which was better value for money based on their own criteria. I then got them to research how the World Health Organisation had helped countries to work together more effectively in the last 20 years.
