To me the first chapter is interesting because it really shows us a very different perspective. Most of us don't get into much trouble, and Cole has gotten into trouble with the law. For example, he broke into a hardware store and beat up the kid who told on him. Another aspect I believe causes me to be intrigued is that similarly to how Garvey wants Cole to become a better person, we also want Cole to change for the better. Another thing I find intriguing is that I am trying to find Cole's point of view, but it is difficult to do so. His decisions seem very irrational to me. I really do think the the book gives us a completely new perspective that is unheard of in our school environment and that is what makes this book so interesting.

In these two chapters, we see that Cole has finally reached the Circle Justice camp. On the journey there, we read about a flashback about the time that Cole spent in jail while awaiting his sentence. Cole has done horrible things but he doesn't seem to learn from his actions. He puts on a mask and acts his way out of trouble. Then, a scene is shown in where Cole is reminiscing, crying, and talking about his life. We are shown that he had a troubled life filled with abuse and very little love, which ended up turning him into who he was. His father and mother were drunkards who beat and ignored him. They were too harsh and Cole, not wanting this, decided to find a way to get attention. He only did it the wrong way. Cole did many wrong deeds just to get attention. The parents' negligence turned Cole into someone that he didn't want to be. Once Cole reaches the land, he is set up, but soon burns everything given to him. He starts running towards the water to swim away.
I was actually right! In the previous chapter, I was wondering if something bad had happened in his family. I'm just wondering why he couldn't open up about it and talk to people.

In chapters 2-3, we learn more about Cole's personality. He has reached the Circle Justice Camp. He talks about how he is angry at his parents, the lawyers, his friends, and everyone else. Cole is immature and cannot take responsibility for his own actions. At the end of chapter 2, he burns all his supplies that he was supposed to use throughout his journey. At the beginning of chapter 3, he states that he wishes he was dead. Garvey comes to check on Cole and he starts crying in his cell. Cole then later describes how his parents were drunks, and showed no attention to Cole. He never got any support from his parents which led to Cole having all this anger built up inside him. When Cole gets out of his cell and is on the land, he wants to swim away, and starts reminiscing about his dad always abused and criticized him. An important quote that Garvey said was forgiving is not forgetting. This means that when you forgive someone, it doesn't mean they forget that problem.

In Chapters 2-3 you get to learn more about the character and his past actions until the point of the banishment. We get more information on The Circle of Justice, and his time in the cell. In the chapters we also get to see the bond between Cole and Garvey, these emotions are shown through objects and little activities, such as the cake. Most importantl we get to see what Cole thinks of the world and how he reacts to it. Some these examples could be that he kicked the wall and flipped over the table, and mumbles to himself about the crumy life he has right now. This chapter in all just show relationship, emotion, and feeling towards people and others.

In chapters 2 and 3, Cole reaches the Circle Justice camp. He tells Garvey that he really does want to change, but actually doesn't. We also learn that both of his parents are drunkards. Because of them, Cole was influenced to do terrible things to others, since he thought that no one cared about him. His father constantly beat him up, and his mother ignored him. This is probably why Cole always acts with no care or thought. For example, he burns all his supplies that were given to him, and wants to swim from island to island until someone finds him and brings him back to the mainland. These two chapters show how Cole's parents have such a big impact on him and his actions. If they did not drink so much, I think that Cole would not be as cold-hearted and uncaring.

He then starts to reflect on the circe, and what happened, and how he pretended to feel sorry for his actions while getting angrier and angrier. When he finally gets on the island, he is so full of anger that he burns down his shelter with all of his supplied. He also misinterprets an important lesson that garvey gave him, and makes him sad. I get that Cole's parents hurt him as a kid, but I would at least expect someone to have some sympathy towards him other than Garvey. The boy has gone through hell his entire life so that no one else sympathizes that he can take his feelings out? I honestly am really mad about the community's response towards a beaten boy. I think that in the future, Cole's actions will consequence in getting him killed. If I was angry I would kick around rocks or something, but not burn my entire shelter! He is literally just giving his one chance of survival away.

In chapter two and three we dive deeper into Cole's personality. Even if hundreds of people ask he he needs help, he'll say "yeah he wants to change" but deep inside of him, he doesn't actually want to change. In the story, Cole asks if Garvey could sponsor him. Garvey asks Cole several times if Cole really, truly want to change. Every single time Cole says yes. What Garvey doesn't know is that Cole really does not want to change. Another time in the chapters when Garvey let Cole try every ingredient to make a cake. After Cole has ate every single ingredient Garvey asks him "Have I left anything out?" When I red this part of the chapters I was really thinking why would Garvey give this kind of example if all Cole would do is deny every single thing. Every question he was asked he answer is some negative way. Whether it was no or that's a stupid question. If I was Garvey I would say to Cole that if he really wants to change, he should act like he wants to change and not just say it. Every time a person asks Cole something he'll say something that he doesn't even think about before he says it out loud. How I look at is that he is very fortunate to have a lot of people ask him is he needs help but he never acts like he is grateful for it. He doesn't seem like he knows that people are giving him a chance to start over and I am really interested to see if that is going to change or not.

In chapters 2-3 we start to see how Cole wanted to escape by asking Garvey and Edwin to take off the handcuffs so he can "help" carry the boxes to the shelter. Later, Garvey gives Cole a blanket, called at.oow, because he tells Cole that he trusts him. By Garvey's actions, Cole is surprised because he knows that no one can trust him. Soon after Cole begins to get so angry that he sets his shelter and supplies on fire. In chapter three, Garvey goes to visit Cole with a bag of ingredients and a cake. He has Cole try each ingredient and the cake, but it didn't matter to Cole and he couldn't understand why Garvey was having him do this. After Garvey left, Cole gets angry again, but this time it's about Garvey and the cake demonstration. This causes Cole to throw the ingredients and the cake at the wall and shouts out that his life sucks. His actions caused him to break his promise and throw the at.oow into the fire. He wanted to escape by trying to swim to the nearest island east, which he did. While he is swimming, he remembers that Garvey told him that he's been accepted into Circle Justice. This is when the story starts to confuse me because it is telling me that Cole is swimming, but towards the end of chapter three he speaking with Garvey about being accepted into Circle Justice and Peter forgiving him about what he's done. Cole still doesn't care about Peter forgiving. Garvey can tell that Cole thinks that this is all about him, but he tells Cole that if Peter doesn't heal from Cole's actions, how can he forgive him.

In chapters 2-3, Cole begins his isolation on an island. He has all the items necessary for survival such as matches, food, and a special blanket. Yet out of all the stupid things he could have done, he chooses to burn everything and destroy most of his chances of surviving. I think the author uses the symbolization of fire to depict the strong emotions that Cole must have been feeling. Cole is so confident that he can escape his punishments but all of his actions has consequences. He is still in the mindset of blaming everyone else for his problems. He doesn't realize that there are people out there who want to help. The way I see it is that Cole has fallen into a hole and people have seen him and reached out a hand to pull him out. Yet, even when a way out is literally given right in front of him, he refuses to believe that people want to help and becomes suspicious of every move instead of trusting.

He feels trapped and alone on the island. He then become furious and burnt down his one and only shelter to keep him safe, which was not a smart at all. Going on the chapter three, Cole begins to set up a mind set where he thinks that nobody understands him or care about him, and even to the point where he thinks that his parents would be more happy if he was dead. Cole then remembers about how Garvey went to visit him at the detention center, with groceries. Garvey was asking Cole about his parents. He was also teaching and making Cole eat the ingredients to cake, to explain that the ingredients taste bland and bad when there alone, but all of them together makes something delicious. Back to present day on the island, Cole watches his shelter burn and thinks about the times when his father abused him and being ignored by his mother. He is hurt how his parents agreed on him being sent to Circle Justice. He then starts to cry and laugh at the same time which means that he is mentally hurt. He then rips all of his clothes off while running water, where he believes that he will swim from island to the mainland. Cole is very desperate to escape and wants to have a normal life instead of being treated as garbage.

In these three chapters, we take a look into Cole's somewhat foolhardy decision to attempt to swim out of the bay. We also take a look into his thought process and the animosity he held towards everyone, especially those in the community who participated in Circle Justice. Then, he nearly died of hypothermia. However, the warmth from the ashes of the fire he caused saved him. He then met a Spirit Bear, which he tried to kill as promised to Garvey several chapters before. However, it ran away, and we see another memory of the events leading up this point. Members of the community criticized him and wanted him to be imprisoned, and he was generally fine until it came to his father. When his father said that he did what was best for his son, Cole retaliated, remarking on how he beat him and drank. However, other members participating in Circle Justice still wanted him imprisoned. Back on the island, he tries to survive, but he's only doing so to try to escape. The theme of this beautiful story is simple - acceptance and forgiveness. Cole made a mistake - two horrible mistakes in fact (the burglary and the battery) - but his ego is what is making this situation all the more complicated for him. Imagine how much easier this conflict would have been if Cole simply accepted that he had taken a path that nobody should ever take. He should understand that the fact that he had given a child nightmares and flashbacks of the beating every single night is utterly horrifying. However, the parents should also accept their mistakes and try to make amends. Their ego also affects Cole's attitude. They don't try to help and assist Cole out of this situation, and instead, drink and beat him until he submits to their abuse.

In chapters 4-6, Cole Matthews make some foolish decisions and how the community is being affected through his actions. By now, I thought he would come to a realization that he needs to change in order for his surroundings to do the same as well. Matthew's environment is providing him with so many opportunities, but his decisions were never wise. Cole should not act like he is innocent because that will lead him to nowhere, and would end up where he started. For example, Cole swam miles to attempt to escape, but ended up on the same island due to lack of concentration. I am very shocked that the author had a different sense of writing by jumping straight to the conflicts, themes, and settings. The conflicts are Cole and the world, his parents, and now sensing a little between Garvey. The theme is coming of age, but also to be honest and true to yourself. The setting is a prison located in Minneapolis, the cell he was staying in, and
the isolated Alaska island.

In chapters four though six, Cole attempts to escape, but realizes after swimming for quite some time that he is not going anywhere. I think this could reflect on what is going inside his head, with the Circle Justice and his parents. He feels as if the Circle Justice is not going to help him and that maybe going to the island was a waste of everyone's time. He doesn't know how much help he is being offered, so he just sits through the Healing Circle, lying to everyone about how he really feels about the situation. His parents are not much of a help, though, and that is why Cole cannot be blamed for who he is. With his parents neglecting his emotions and his father abusing him, he feel so much anger and pain, so he takes it out on everyone. In the end, I think people shouldn't blame him for his actions and hopefully, they will realize that Cole's parents are lying to everyone about the abuse and drinking. It angers me so much how people in the Healing Circle, especially the ones on Peter Driscal's "side", want him to go to jail and think that that will solve all their problems when what really needs help is Cole's parents.

In these chapters, Cole tries to escape the island by swimming in the freezing water. While he was swimming, he had flashbacks of the Healing Circle. During that meeting, he gets extremely angry since most people there wanted to put him in jail. After having those flashbacks, he ends up back at the shore since he was not thinking about the tides and the anger he had clogged up his mind. First of all, I did not think he would successfully make it since the nearing island was really far away and by the time he would have made it, he would have hypothermia. His decision was foolish and nearly costed him his life. Also I want to talk about what I think about the Healing Circle. The Healing Circle is supposed to help heal the relationship between Cole and Peter, and hopefully allow forgiveness between the both of them. However most of the people were angry or worried about the situation of whether it was okay to let Cole free or go to jail. So instead of thinking what would help Cole not do this again, they just said to put him in jail which would do nothing to help him heal or become a better person. Cole's problems are family related, so maybe it would have been best to put him and his parents in family counseling. This event really makes Cole angry since he saw everyone want him to get out of their city.

In these three chapters, Cole Matthews came to a realization of his loneliness and his weakness. Matthews had to fight the Spirit Bear, but had failed. Through these three chapters, I was extremely shocked because Cole finally changed and cared for once. There was a storm on the island, and a tree ha fallen, surprisingly, laying painfully on the ground, Cole finally asked " are you okay?" Through that one sentence, I was in awe. In my opinion, I thought he would not change near the end of the story, but I was obviously wrong. My prediction for the rest of this book, is that Matthews will continue doing good deeds and change himself completely. By the end of the novel, he will be a respectful, polite, and kind boy with no intention of violence.

In the three chapters, Cole Matthews is trapped on an island and always see a white bear, The Spirit Bear. Cole is brave enough to go up to it and try to kill it but the Spirit Bear was quick and beat up and almost killed Cole. The whole fight was very gruesome and I didn't know how he'd survive it. I thought that the white bear was mocking him since he beat up Peter so it was doing the same thing to Cole. I thought it was very foolish of how he would fight a massive animal, not everything can be afraid of you. It's kind of weird when all of the sudden after he is beaten by the bear, than it starts to rain and Cole thinks about all these sad/depressing thoughts such as: dying, and how cruel the world is.

In chapters 7-9, we see how Cole's perspective of life has changed. Coming from a mindset where he is not afraid of anyone or anything. He believes he can kill everything, and has such a negative outlook on life. Cole has a gruesome fight with the white Spirit Bear which leaves him bleeding and lying on the ground. Cole has flashbacks of when his parents never helped him or supported him. Then all of the sudden near the end of chapter 9, a giant tree falls very close to Cole. For once, he has a heart and feels empathy and compassion for the birds. This twist in the story changed the plot tremendously because I never thought Cole would has a change in mindset, especially this early. From being such a negative person to having compassion for the birds, I think he will change and become a better person. I predict that somehow Cole will recover from all his injuries and be a positive person.

in chapters 7-9 Cole attacks the Spirit Bear. But instead of killing it, the bear almost killed him. Cole is left on the ground to die. This chapter terrified and confused me. I was hanging on the edge of my seat. Was the story going to end there? Cole's lifeless body, eaten by mosquitoes? Boy, that would have been a tragic ending. The moral would be"never get angry, because I will kill you someday". But when it just left the book on a cliffhanger I was so mad. I hate cliffhangers, and I almost want to read ahead. The temptation is so great! But really, I think I would have died right then and there, right after the first swing. I really feel very happy when Cole asked the birds if they were ok. It made me realize that everyone cares for someone, no matter what they do or say to them sometimes, because in the end, someone life is most important.

One thing that especially stood out to me was the way Cole described his different nightmares. I guess he didn't realize that those feelings in his nightmares were the same emotions that he feels when he is abused and that others feel when he bullies them. I'm positive someone already mentioned that to him, probably Garvey, but from his character development so far, I would think he wouldn't accept the fact that he hurts others the way his father hurts him.
Another key component in these three chapters, was how Cole finally is in the position of victim. The white spirit bear is one of the first people who actually stand up for itself and fights back. Although Cole is hurt severely, it is all part of his consequences that came with his actions. No one made him attack Peter. No one made him attack the bear either. It is perfect how the author uses blood to relate that both Cole's and Peter's pain are the same.
In chapter 9, Cole's feelings about the bird nest can be put into one word, jealousy. He yearns for that type of family love, something he will never have. When the lightning causes the tree to fall, Cole has a moment of empathy for the baby birds. He realizes that he was never stronger. He just made others weaker so he could feel in control.

The Spirit Bear, every single time the Spirit Bear appears Cole Matthews say I am going to kill it. Ended up that the Spirit Bear was to quick and Cole just could not follow. "Life is not a game" Cole does not think before he acts. What ever he is thinking he will just do it. Cole I would describe him as brave because not running away from the Spirit Bear and just being in front of it and even wanting to go against it is brave. Cole is placed that he is the one getting hurt. He is that one being attacked after his actions, I believe this is what he deserves. No one told him to attack or hurt
Peter but he chose to. He chose is actions. Unfortunately, now he can not go back. Cole should have always thought bout the consequences before acting because as you can see here, her clearly just did what he was thinking at that moment. This far into the story, this is the first time Cole has actually had a feel for the bird. Which is a surprise. He just felt that way so he can have more power.

At least Cole had the confidence to have the mindset of defeating to bear. After being beaten by the bear, Cole lays there helpless that nobody can help him. He does not care if he dies at the spot. He then sees a bird feeding food to her babies, Cole starts to wonder why the mother even cares to feed her babies. It is because Cole did not get affection from his other while growing up, so he has a burden. Later on the bear comes back looking at Cole, and terrified and shouts for help. He keeps sleepy and light headed due to non-stop gushing blood. During these chapters I felt the suspense and the action which was overwhelming. I thought that the bear would be kind because it is a "spirit bear," but I was wrong. I assume that Cole will become a more thoughtful person further in the novel.

In chapters 7-9, Cole finds the Spirit Bear and attempts to kill it. The bear starts attacking, mauling, and biting him until Cole could no longer move. After this move, Cole finally feels how it is like being helpless and have no one to help him, like how Peter was after Cole attacked him. This perspective slowly turns into anger. He starts to blame others for putting him onto this island instead of jail and he blames others for Spirit Bear nearly killing him. Cole's character is very stubborn and he always thinks it is never his fault. He also thinks that since no one ever cared for him, he doesn't have to care or help anyone else, and he thinks he can do whatever he wants to anyone. Whenever life starts giving him a lesson, like Spirit Bear attacking him, he doesn't stop his anger and he never learns that he can not always be in control of everything. Cole is very ignorant to the fact that people can not be in control of everything. I do think, however, that Cole will eventually learn this lesson and become a better person, indicated by him caring for the birds at the end of the chapter. Although it may take a long time for this to happen, I think he will slowly learn how to be a better person.

In these few chapters, we see a drastic change in Cole's point of view on life. It completely took me by surprise when he said that the world was actually beautiful. He realized that he had missed so much of the earth's beauty while he was making horrible decisions, and he had even destroyed a lot of the beauty in the world. He also decided that he desperately wanted to survive the island. He realized that he wanted his life to have meaning, and to do that, he would have to be determined to stay alive in this terrifying situation. These changes really surprised me, since they seemed completely out of his character. I guess he acted this way because he was directly faced with death. I would imagine that he was looking back at his life and noticing all of the wrong things he did, and he just wanted to survive. I also feel like Cole is beginning to want to be a better person. Staring at death straight in the face must have been very frightening, and he probably did not want his life to end when he had not done any good to the world. Cole is also starting to be less arrogant. He no longer talks as if he is better than the Spirit Bear or just nature in general. As a matter of fact, he was absolutely terrified of the Spirit Bear and hoped he would spare his life. Overall, the novel seems to be getting more and more exciting, and I am very interested to see how else Cole will change in the next few chapters.

I found these chapters, as well as the last bunch of chapters to be very gruesome. I am not the type of person who can handle scary, hideous, or gruesome scenes, even in books. Cole meets the Spirit Bear and is mauled in the last chapters. Here, he is describing the pain he feels from the flies as well as natural causes. He is slowly rotting away. But during this time, he desperately has a sudden will to live. He has looked to the birds, the dead and the alive ones, for comfort. Cole is determined to live and survive, just by thinking about the sparrows and the circle of life. The circle of life reference is something that I find very deep and meaningful. Not only does life go on, but even when you die, you are not dying for nothing. Your life and death is for a purpose - you just have to find it. I think this is what helps Cole realize that he wants to make something better out of his life. He doesn't want to end up miserable. Assuming that he actually changes in the next chapters, then we will see a gigantic growth in his spirit and mentality.

These few chapters were by far my favorites of the whole novel. I loved seeing how Cole continues to change and shift away from his old self. One thing that completely shocked me was the heart-to-heart conversation Cole had with his mother. I was certainly surprised to read about how she stopped drinking. I am very glad that Cole was able to open up to her, and now, they are on relatively good terms with each other. Furthermore, I also loved reading about Cole's conversation with Edwin and Garvey. It really showed that he was sorry for what he had done in the past, and something amazing had sparked in him while he was so close to dying. Additionally, Cole admits that Garvey and Edwin were the only people who actually cared about him. He really appreciates all the effort they have put into getting him back on the island. This scene was especially heartwarming because Cole finally spoke about his feelings and how he didn't want to life to end without any meaning. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next few chapters, for I predict that he will encounter the Spirit Bear once again. He tells the circle justice of how his dad beats him for no reason. His father angrily responds to him that he doesn't, even though he does. His mother, however, just sits silently and nervously.

In these chapters, Cole came to the grave realization of the abuse he had committed against others - the sustained cruelty he held against those who wanted to help him in his situation. He now wanted to live life. His realizations brought him to feel sympathy for the mouse he was going to eat alive. He finally came to understand, however, that this was the circle of life. The changes Cole underwent after his gruesome battle with the Spirit Bear made him seem like a completely different person. Of course, he still wasn't an angel, and his new philosophies did not erase his reprehensible past. Nonetheless, that does not mean he's a bad person either. It was his anger and emotions that controlled his actions. His history of family abuse also caused this. After all, he now actually has empathy for the living. You could observe that when the novel described his pity for the mouse he was going to eat. His interactions with humans after the encounter with the bear were also changed. He was no longer rude to Garvey and the people whom had helped him (granted, he was still severely injured, which may or may not have been a factor). The changes seen in Cole gave the novel a new shove in a new direction that I had not expected to happen.

Out of the whole book, these chapters were the ones that I felt connected to me the strongest. As you read, you can sense the emotions as they jump around in Cole. From anger to realization, Cole is on his journey to letting himself trust others. He finally learns that Garvey and Edwin honestly care for him and want to help. As a reader, you gradually understand the lessons that Cole has been taught by the experience. The symbolization in simply touching the spirit bear is tremendous. It is the moment in which everything changes and the plot gets twisted. Cole finds out the truth through hardships and confrontation. I can't wait to see what happens next because Cole is faced with choices that I personally wouldn't handle well.

I think these three chapters were the ones that I could connect with. We learn that Cole has truly changed for the better and that he will only speak the truth because of his encounter with Spirit Bear. Cole learns why Garvey and Rosey were helping him, even if he was a horrible kid. It was because Rosey thinks why live if you don't help other people and make the world a better place. Garvey helps Cole because he himself was a delinquent who went to jail. He wanted to help Cole stay off the path he took. I honestly never thought Cole's transformation would be like this. I thought it would have been near the end of his banishment. Honestly, the plot twist that occurred made the book so much more enjoyable. In the next few chapters we see Cole's transformation in effect. Cole has healed a little bit but not fully. His father was arrested for child abuse and his mother starts visiting Cole everyday and shows him how much she loves him. When Cole was asked about if he blamed anyone for getting him in this mess, he says he only blames himself, even though his father abused him badly. After reading this part, I knew that Cole is no longer filled with anger and now he knows why life is so beautiful. Cole meets up with the circle of justice and after a few meetings they let him go back to the island. The only thing is he has to do everything himself, including building his own shelter, paying for his supplies, etc. The book explains that he had to sell his skis, motorcycle, and his snowmobile, and I was surprised with the fact he was that rich. I can't wait to see how he handles being on the island again. I am really excited to read the next few chapters of the book!

Chapters 17-19 were very interesting and suspenseful. We see how each character changes through each chapter, however some characters still have the same emotional feelings. Cole is starting to realize more things in life and be more conscious about it. However sometimes he still has anger and stubbornness built up inside him. This story has a lot of symbolism. For example, when Edwin makes Cole carry the rock up the mountain, he must treat it like his ancestors, with respect. Once Cole carries up the rock, it represents his anger. Sometimes I feel this way too. Sometimes I have good days and sometimes I have bad days. Cole is slowly changing, learning to accept other people and value other people's opinions. We start to see how the relationship with Edwin, Garvey, and Cole starts to play out. They stick up for each other and help each other out. Cole starts to think about how his mother helps him, and all the good things she has done for him.

These chapters displays the beginnings of Cole with his second chances on the island. He is shown to still have his anger. He acts rude toward Garvey and Edwin. He is still arrogant, although he learned a little from his near-death experience. Now, we see a little bit of improvement. He doesn't attempt an escape attempt even though there are many perfect opportunities. However, he soon learns from Edwin how to deal with his anger. He learns several life lessons. We discover one of his primary conflicts (if not the primary antagonist) is his uncontrollable anger. Edwin cannot get rid of Cole's anger, and Cole cannot get rid of it himself. It is something he has to control on his own. We see Cole's progress. He threw the embodiment of his anger as a stone down the hill he had hiked. He no longer felt cold or shocked while in the river, but he felt a peace. He felt warmth.

In these three chapters, we are bale to observe the change that Cole is going through. Cole doesn't want to let this chance on the island go, or else he'll go to jail and come out even worse. Cole has to do everything on his own. When he wakes up, he must go to an icy cool pond and sit there until his anger is numbed and he is calm. Then when coming back to his camp site, he must carry a giant stone up a hill and roll it down afterwards. The stone represents his anger. If he wants to get rid of his anger, he must try and let it go. But we are told that you can never get rid of anger. Anger is something that will forever be present. You can however, try and find your inner peace. I find these three chapters to be the most symbolic chapters because of the tremendous growth and change we see in Cole just through these small but mighty actions. He even manages to catch a glimpse of the Spirit Bear at the very end of chapter 19. This shows how the Spirit Bear is just another reminder of his unspoken promise to change. He may not know it now, but I believe that internally, he really wants to change and become a better person. I believe that he has made it his goal and has promised himself that he will find a way to make up for his past.

In the chapter 17, 18, and 19, Cole learns to deal with his anger through freezing cold water early in the morning, carrying a ancestry rock up a hill and rolling it down everyday. He also dances at night imitating animals he sees during the day when the sun is out. The cold water helps him not think about his anger. It helps him to think about how to not freeze. The point of carrying the ancestry rock was to carry it to the top of the hill and you release your anger by pushing it so it would roll down the hill. When he dances it symbolizes the animal and he can learn different qualities or even new meaning to life. I am now a bit more interested in how he would turn out after Edwin and Garvey helped him. It seems like Cole is starting to care about others more and act a bit "nicer".

I thought Cole would have to accept that he just had anger in him, and he just has to push it away. I feel sort of proud for him, that he completely changed his point of life around. He realized that making a canoe will never allow him to become happy. He also learned in himself how to do the anger dance. I feel sympathy for Cole, but I wonder what it will be like for him when he returns to the city. There will be no pond to soak in every morning. There will be so many people and I am scared that Cole might revert to his old ways again. But after seeing Cole do the anger dance, I feel like he has finally come to peace with himself, and how he needs to help, not hurt others. Cole just has to fix his mistakes, starting with Peter, and apologizing to everyone he has ever hurt.

I absolutely loved these chapters, for we get to look even deeper into Cole's mentality change and character development. I found his anger dance to be quite interesting to read about. It amazed me how the movements just came to him, and he did not even have to think anymore. I was very surprised, though, that he began apologizing to the world for all the horrible things he had done in the past. It really shows how he is maturing and coming of age. The old Cole would have most likely already found a way to escape the island; however, this new Cole diligently takes a soak in the pond every day, excluding the one time he had a bad sleep and did not, and rolls his ancestors up the mountain. If you compare his character right now to his character at the very beginning of the novel, they seem as if they were two completely different people. Cole has undergone so much change for the better since his first encounter with the Spirit Bear. Even if this is so, though, Cole still experiences moments where he comes into contact with his anger and inner demons. For example, when he found a log of wood, instead of carving a totem, he was actually considering creating a canoe, so he could escape; however, he did not give in to his old self and made it impossible for him to turn the log into a canoe. As of now, I really wonder if Cole will ever get a chance to have a conversation with Peter. I certainly want to see what would happen if Cole sincerely apologized to him and if Peter forgave him.

Cole feels sometimes depressed about them and he probably learned his anger and abusiveness from his dad because the dad slaps him/beats him up. I mean it wasn't his fault that he beat up Peter, it was just the way he grew up and was treated by his parents. Cole suddenly sees a mama bird feeding her young and he is kind of sad because he doesn't have that type of love. I saw that Cole wanted his last meal with Edwin and Garvey to be really special because Cole started to see how they were the friends he never had. As each of them danced the Spirit Bear dance, I found that they each may have had different aspects of their Spirit Bear. When Cole found the large log and wanted to build a canoe out of it first, I started to think if the Spirit Bear would maul him again for doing something that he knows is wrong. Until Edwin went back to check on him the second time, I'm also proud that Cole was being honest and decided to carve a totem pole instead. As days passed, after Cole added more animals to his totem pole, I was wondering what his anger would look like after he danced the dance of anger. That night when he did, I didn't think that it would be filled with violence or yelling. Now that Cole had danced the dance of anger, I'm anxious to read about how his totem pole turned out.

During the night Cole can not sleep because he keeps on thinking about his parents and Peter. He feels frustrated. The next morning Edwin brings Cole to a pool. Edwin first goes in the freezing water without no reaction, while Cole goes in after freezing. Edwin tells him that this is one way to release your anger. During the next day Edwin and Garvey show him the whale dance which I suppose is another way to release anger. In these chapters I feel like Edwin and Garvey teach Cole how to release his anger, because Col can not have anger all tangled up in a knot in his body. He will feel very uncomfortable. So it is better for him to release it and bring in positive energy instead by relaxing.

In my opinion, I found these chapters to be quite interactive and were very interesting. Cole learns many things that will help him later in life during these chapters. The main things he learns are how he was going to truly heal and also that being invisible does not mean you have to try to hide, it is when you have a clear mind and are invisible to yourself. I really enjoyed how the author put so much emotion into Cole's anger dance. Throughout the dance, we see Cole reenacting his first few days on the island, trying to attack spirit bear, burning his shelter, his experience with the storm, etc. But what I found most eye-catching was the end of the anger dance when he starts becoming more emotional. Cole starts screaming "I'm sorry", which I assume he is saying this to all the people he has hurt in the past, mainly Peter. After hearing him scream I am sorry a few times, he starts whispering the words "I forgive you". He was saying this to his father, which kind of sent chills up my spine. Throughout the whole book, Cole has been resenting his father for all the abuse he has done to Cole. After all Cole has went through, he finally gains the ability to forgive his father, which must have been very difficult for him but is significant to his character. Another thing that was a bit surprising to me was when Cole starts thinking about leaving the island. I already knew that Cole was not going to leave the island since we see him truly want to change, but I was caught off-guard when I read that he was thinking about carving out a canoe to escape. These chapters are filled with conflict and emotion, but I really enjoyed them. I can't wait to see how the author decides to end the book off.

In these chapters, we know a lot more about Cole and his personality. When they had the dance, Cole had a choice to let some feelings away. This related to the meditation we did today in class. One of my thought is that not everyone can truly let go of sadness or anger. It is hard to forget something bad, you will more or less remember the result of something bad. Most of the time we can not remember good things but the things we do not want to remember we remember. These chapters really shows how the character changes and tries to let go of the feelings we do not want. Just because of anger, it shall not effect our actions, it should be taken care of. I believe that anger should be taken care of before letting it effect our decisions.

In this first chapter, we are just being introduced to the main character, Cole. He comes off in a very defiant, aggressive manner. Right now he is avoiding jail for robbery. From Cole's point of view, everything is someone else's fault, he doesn't want to admit that he's done something wrong. It is always, "if he didn't do that, then I wouldn't have done this." so we see a very immature perspective coming from Cole right now. He seems to be very irrational most of the time. He doesn't think about how things will affect others as well as himself in the long run. He only thinks about what makes him feel better, or what benefits him. I found it puzzling that Cole would rather be feared than liked by him peers. I mean, it makes sense why he leads a lonely life if that is how he going to act.

In these chapters we are learning about how Cole has really matured. He is living at peace with himself and the island. He is no longer filler with uncontrollable rage, but rather a pacific outlook on life. Cole recognized that not everything is about him and there are a lot of things that he cannot control. He tries to become a part of the island, live in the same environment as the animals there. Another thing that he is learning is how to be sorry. How to realize that he did do something wrong, and he also has to learn to fix it. Forgiving is not forgetting. You can't just forget what happened, that's not what life is about. It's about how you learn from it that makes you a better person.

In these chapters, we get to finally see Cole and Peter interact with each other. Previously, I said that I could not wait for them to meet once again, and I certainly was not disappointed when I read these chapters. At first, I thought that Peter was acting a bit too harshly towards Cole. I believed that Peter should have been more open minded, and he should have realized that Cole was truly changing inside. As I kept on reading; however, I decided put myself in Peter's shoes, and I noticed that I would have been extremely rude to Cole and not want to have anything to do with him as well. If someone beat me up so badly that I attempted to commit suicide twice in a relatively short amount of time, I would certainly try to avoid that person at all costs. Would I have gone so far as to physically hurt that person? Maybe not, but nevertheless, I completely understood where Peter was coming from. He believed that Cole was just lying when he said that he changed, and to be honest, I would have come to that conclusion as well. It takes a very long time to heal, especially since Peter had to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally. A simple "I'm sorry" would have definitely not have been enough. Additionally, I really enjoyed reading about how Garvey told Cole that if his wounds from the Spirit Bear were not completely healed yet, Peter's mentality would be far from healed. This really made Cole think and at least understand a bit of what Peter was going through. Furthermore, I was very glad that the two were able to reconcile with each other, and they even saw the Spirit Bear. They both became "invisible" because they forgave each other and even themselves. This scene was very heartwarming, since Peter had just acted in a fit of anger by beating up Cole himself, and after letting out all of his frustrations, they were able to sort things out. As for the end of the novel, I loved how Peter helped Cole carve a circle into the blank space of his totem pole. It showed that Peter was willing to help him, and it also had the meaning that life and death revolve around a constant circle.

Throughout these last few chapters, I began to see the story slowly coming to a "bigger picture"; (all the pieces to the puzzle was coming together) such as in chapter 24...whereas Peter becomes depressed to the point he barely even speaks. This is due to the fact when Cole beat him; it made him feel so worthless...as Cole had felt before when his father beat him. However, Cole; on the other hand, really matures into something I truthfully would have never expected...an adult. When I first realized this, it was shocking; beyond mind- blowing. To compare Cole at the beginning to now...it's as if there are two different people. For example, instead of blaming it on everyone else before; he now forgives because even he makes mistakes. In the very last chapter though, (chap. 28) both Peter as well as Cole head out together...in which Peter is first trying to pick a fight. (Such as when he hit or kicked Cole) Instead of becoming easily angry though, Cole simply tries to offer a solution; but before that, an apology...he comforts Peter when the boy starts crying by hugging him. Furthermore, I really emphasize on the hug because most of the time; an apology can be counterfeit as talk is cheap. This (Cole's actions) was how I really grew into remembering the importance of just stopping and thinking. (Not overthinking) In the end though, I found myself searching for more chapters; or even just one more page.

Over the chapters, the story seemed to get even better. I am finally enjoying the book. When I first read that Peter tried to suicide twice, I thought to myself why would he do that even if he got beat up. I really don't understand why you would feel worthless about yourself. I was really intrigued when Peter was brought to the same island as Cole. Peter still doesn't think Cole changed and despises him. The parents seemed to believe him and I had hope that Peter will like Cole again, it did happen but events followed up. Many weeks passed an still no sign of friendship. Eventually they sort of talked a tiny bit. I thought when Cole and Peter were by themselves walking to the pool they were best friends. But apparently Peter was mad and started punching and kicking Cole. That brought a huge twist and Peter was saying why don't you hit me or kill me. Cole changed and tried not to be mad or hurt him. I felt bad after Peter started crying and I was happy when they made up and became friends after Cole hugged him. Overall I didn't really like the story line in the beginning but after a while it got better and better.

In these chapters Cole is worrying about Peter even more, because whenever Edwin comes back to see Cole he brings bad news such as Peter trying to commit suicide again. This is really sad to see Peter trying to commit suicide, and Cole is feeling all depressed and lonely and scared. But Cole wants to help Peter. I can see Cole getting to realize more of what he has done and how he can help others. Soon later Cole and Peter meet, but Peter does not want to talk. Cole then tries to talk to him saying that he has to ask forgiveness to Peter but also cheer him up for all the things he did, but Peter does not like the idea. A few days later Peter and Cole get stuck together on the island due to Edwin and Mr. Driscal. In the last chapter, Peter brings Cole to the pond and tells him that they can never be friends, but surprisingly Cole hugs Peter, and realizes all the bad things he had done to him. Soon they forgive each other and become friends. Right when they were hugging the spirit bear comes along staring at them, but they are calm and know that the bear would not do anything. During this scene in the novel I was very happy to see that they finally made up and are friends. Cole was such a gigantic change. I am also relieved that Cole is in a good relationship with people so he will not live in his past anymore. Now he has found another person to live a happy life. In the beginning of the novel I did not put much interest in the book, but towards the middle and end I started to get more into the novel since Cole's personality was changing for the better.

In these chapters, we see Cole and Peter interact with each other for the first time since the Healing Circle. When Peter first had to stay with Garvey and Cole on the island, he just sat alone and stared at the shore. The most he did was do anything Garvey told him to do, but that was it since he wanted to avoid Cole at all costs. After he stays on the island for a while and sees how everything operates, he starts going to the pond and occasionally rolls down the anger rock. I was actually surprised at first since I did not think Peter would be comfortable to do these things with Cole, even if Garvey was with him. But after he starts doing these activities, he starts to bully Cole a little bit. At first, it was a little shove, but as time went on it escalated into smashing the bear on Cole's totem. I already guessed that something like this would eventually happen since at one of the Healing Circle meetings Peter said "I want to see someone smash Cole's head into the sidewalk". To be fair, I would probably do some of those acts myself if I was Peter. I would not have gone as far to smash his totem, but I would have probably shoved him once or twice. I would also probably never trust Cole a singe bit, I would think that he was just pretending he had changed and was waiting for the perfect time to strike at me. Eventually Cole and Peter go to the pond alone, and I was a bit surprised by the fact that Peter requested to do so. Peter confronted Cole and started to beat him up, but Cole did not fight back. Cole barely did anything to stop Peter. Then all of a sudden, it stopped. Peter was crying and Cole tried to comfort him. After this situation they both go roll their own ancestor rocks and went back to camp. By then they both forgave one another and Peter taught Cole how to carve a bit. I am really proud how Cole reacted in this situation. You can see that Cole has truly changed. I really enjoyed at the end how they both reconciled with one another and carved a circle into the blank spot on the totem. Even though it may have not been finished, I think that it was an amazing symbol. On his stay on the island, Cole learned about the Circle of life. Everything starts somewhere, but we do not know when or where they will end.

He can't forget his past, he can learn from it however. When you meet a person, you either know what you want to be, or know what you don't want to be. I think that Cole fell into habit when his father beat him. And because Cole didn't know any better, he started taking his anger and aggression out on other people. And this is where he also learns that Garvey and Edwin really do care for him and that he wants to keep that relationship after all they have done for him. At this point, Cole also realizes that he has a shot at a second chance.

Cole wonders if his life meant anything, or if he ever mattered. This is one of the main turning points in the story as Cole understands that not everything is about him, not everyone has to be afraid of him, he can't control his surroundings. He also learns that life is precious and if you want to be treated with kindness, you have to give kindness. This is something that everyone should learn because being a mean old man your whole life isn't going to make you any friends. Cole starts to accept the fact that if he dies on the island, at least he started to understand all the things Garvey was trying to teach him.

I understand that feeling because sometimes I like to be in control of things because it feels better to know than not to know everything. But Cole just felt defied by the Spirit Bear. Again, this relates back to the circle of life thing. Cole defies all his superiors in an aggressive manner, and now he is getting a taste of his own medicine. Instead of Cole killing Spirit Bear, it almost killed him. Cole starts to get a different perspective on life. He really looks at things from a new viewpoint. Now his outlook is one of an insignificant, powerless beat up person. Just like how Peter was. This is a big change for Cole because he is used to being able to manipulate people around him, but now he can't even control the movement of his broken arm.

Cole stays calm even though he knows he's probably going to jail. In my opinion I would be feaking screaming to death if i was injured from being attacked by a bear, and I would be so mad at Garvey.

Only Cole's mom visits him in the hospital not because the dad is a horrible but because Garvey convinces Cole's alcoholic mother to get her life straight straight and so she reported Cole's father to the police explaining to them that he is an abusive father. Although Cole does not really know how his mother really feels about him, when he is dropped off at the detention center, his mom gives him a big hug (this is rare) and she promises Cole that she would visit him the next day.
Also Cole's mother seems a lot happier without her husband, she also explained to Cole the reason why she drank was because it could drowm out all of her fears of her Husband abusing Cole. Also cole plans a trip to go back to the Island, so he sells almost all of his belongings to go back to the island

In the last chapters of Touching Spirit Bear, I thought that Cole and Peter would go back to Minneapolis as friends. Instead, Peter avoided Cole for most of the time when they were there along with Garvey. Peter was also able to get back at Cole when Garvey wasn't looking. The one thing Peter did to get back at Cole was destroying Cole's bear head on his totem pole. He didn't even believe that Cole saw a Spirit Bear. I started to feel angry inside at Peter for ruining the bear head. A few weeks later, Peter started to become more relaxed, but still didn't trust Cole nor believed he saw a Spirit Bear. About almost a month later, Peter wanted to go to the pond alone with Cole. I thought Peter wanted to just have a nice soak in the pond and have a friendly chat with Cole. I didn't think that Peter would then be the one to beat up Cole and wanting him to fight back. I thought that Peter wouldn't be so aggressive toward Cole after what has happened to him. Now, I think that Peter just wanted Cole to know how it felt being punched, kicked, and being pushed down to the ground multiple times. Until, Cole explained how his dad used to beat him up. When Peter was sitting and crying, I thought he was going to push Cole away when he put his arm around him. That was when I saw the first spark of friendship between them. I'm glad that they found another rock to be Peter's ancestor rock. When they both got back to camp and Peter was messing with Cole's totem pole again, I thought Peter was ruining it again. If I was in Cole's shoes, I would have been raging with anger wanting to beat up Peter. I was shocked to read about Peter re-carving Cole's bear head. I'm proud that Cole wanted Peter to teach him how to carve like him, but overall, I'm proud of both of them carving a circle together in the blank space where Cole was going to carve his anger. Similar to what Garvey said about the circle, I think that it represents and teaches that life is a circle. There is a beginning and there is an end, but we don't know when the end will come or where the beginning started.

Cole reaches the island. In a mood of anger, he neglects the fact that this is a chance to redeem himself and he should treat it as such. But instead he burns the cabin Edwin built for him. Cole thinks that this will make him feel better, but it doesn't. I can connect with this because sometimes when I am upset, I do things and don't think about how the outcome will affect me as well as others. Cole didn't think any of this through. He didn't think about where he would sleep, he just took out his anger. He thought he would be getting off of this island, which blind sighted him. Cole needs to learn how to control his anger and think about how his actions will affect him in the long run.

In chapters four through six Cole has a flashback of some of the Circle Justice Meeting he had. Every time the feather was passed around the circle that person could speak as a sign of respect. However, when Peter Driscal receives the feather he tells everyone that he was there because he was the victim of Cole's attack. Cole also bursts because he knows that both of his parents are lying when they say that they have been caring for him his whole life. His mother drinks and doesn't stand up for Cole, while his father is abusive. In my opinion, standing up for yourself was the right move for Cole. If I were in Cole's shoes, and my parents were like that I would definitely disobey the feather rule.
